I'm amazed! I didn't think you guys ever got tornados (or at least really
rarely).

Nor did we! Although, there are sometimes little ones that take
someone's roof off occasionally. But this area has never ever had one!

Wow, that's amazing! As someone who is fairly used to (like you can ever
get used to!) tornados, they often take you buy surprise. The tornado
warning siren is right on the corner by my apartment so I shouldn't be
surprised. But by then, if it's coming towards you it's usually too late to
do anything except grab your cat(s) and huddle in a room at the center of
the house. A bathroom is usually best because there are plumbing pipes in
the walls, but only if it's not on an outside wall. Stay away from windows!

That's insane. Aren't they required to have sirens?

They have emergency broadcast system that broadcast all frequencies TV and
radio plus the weather alerts radios. The cell phone carriers also has a
call back alert to dial your phone in case of a problem like that.

I am sure their are sirens but in all the years I have lived hear and had
tornadoes within sight of my house never heard or seen a siren.

Used to be they were only on fire houses and sometimes school houses (hark
back to the bomb shelters and air raid sirens). That's probably still true
in small towns. But there's no mistaking the sound of a tornado barrelling
towards you. It's not a falsity that it sounds like a rushing train.

Even in the dark, if you look outside the sky is not only black but also
greenish/yellow. Of course, I don't recommend anyone go outside when they
think a tornado is heading their way. Those folks who get their video
cameras are just nuts, AFAIK.

Just grab your cats and head for an inside room. Hunker down. Persia sat a
tornado out with me. I huddled in the bathtub with a pillow and a blanket
and a battery radio to know what was going on, and a flashlight. Persia
followed me and huddled next to the tub. (I didn't have any birds at that
time.) She normally hides under the bed when there is a storm but she knew
this was something worse than just noisy weather so she followed me.
Animals sense more than we do.

Sometimes we do. Surprisingly, around 20 or so years ago my husband's
cousin was killed in one. He might even be the only person to have ever
died in a British tornado.
The tornado happened near the town of Coalville in Leicestershire. I don't
know if there is anything on the web about it. I haven't looked. I can't
remember his first name now - I never knew him - but his surname was the
same as mine.

Don't feel bad Mathew. We don't have them here either and whenever we have a
huge thunderstorm, there are usually tornadoes out and about. But the
destruction isn't as vast as in other places. The only people that seem to
suffer are trailer parks. We're densely wooded though so that could be a
reason why.

To my knowledge, no. sirens are not required by law.

My friends and Family wonder why when the storms roll in that I don't sleep
till they are over and put the cats in a room that we all can get into and
survive if something happens.

I am this paranoid due to real good reason specially during the 2004
hurricanes. Charley came in and it came so fast and furious less than 100
feet from my house a tornado or microburst ( just as bad ) went up the
service line utility line turned around and came back. Stupid me went
outside to lock down a security window that had been ripped opened. I am
a big guy the winds were picking me up and tossing me around like a rag
doll. The security window was the room the cats and us were in that was
that last time I did not have a true plan. I held onto the security shield
and watch this thing go up the security line taking trees and turning them
into pretzels. The winds were picking me up. The sound is something you
can not imagine.

Only way I can describe it is to stand in a hollow tube and have a rail
train travel right by your head. Than the silence it makes the hair on your
body stand up. I am a nut I have been out in these storms before ,been to
disasters sites. Stupid me thought I could handle it. NEVER AGAIN. The
family banging on the window brought me out of the glory struck stage. I
locked that damn security shield sown and hauled as inside. But I never
learn during Francis I climbed a tree and topped; it off it was going to
fall on the house due to the storm.

Heck I wonder if the group remembers last year when we were evacuating the
shelters staying just ahead of the storms.

Years ago while traveling from Missouri back to Florida we were chased by a
tornado down the highway. The people I was traveling with told me to pull
over I said hell with that. I gunned that dang car and hauled a@@ out of
that situation. Pull over hell no
