I used this method (crushing the meds up and mixing it in a baby
syringe) with Miss Lucy when she was younger and it worked pretty
well. I had trouble holding on to her, though, until I knelt on the
floor and put her between my legs. Then she couldn't get away from me
so easily and I had both hands free to "do the deed".

Best of luck to you both....

I've never been successful at pilling my cats, but have been able to
give liquid oral meds pretty well. Maybe you could crush the pill in
just a bit of water, and put in a syringe with something liquid to help
mask the taste.

Default Gizmo TED Report

Well, I picked Gizmo up yesterday from TED.....they couldn't completely rule
out as UTI as she wouldn't pee for them either and because she'd eaten that
morning they couldn't sedate her to gt it out the other way (whatever that
is)....but the vet says she has abdominal tenderness (near the bladder) and
a sensitive kidney(??). So she is on antibiotics.

AND next week she has to go back to get her teeth cleaned....apparently she
has bad tartar. She has to have a general anaesthetic for that and they'll
collect some urine from her then.....poor little kitty. I've never actually
taken her for an operation (she was desexed when I got her)...she's going to
hate me.

SO now....a question. I know this has been asked numerous times BUT....how

Well..heres purrs that she is OK next week and I am sane giving her the
tablets!!!

PS. As for the peeing, she didn't pee all day but still managed to pee once
she got in my car to go home!!!

Well, with some cats it's almost impossible, but...

I've had pretty good luck just pushing it as far back in the throat as
possible with my index finger, causing the cat to gag and instinctively
swallow the pill.

This might not work if the cat has an unusually small head or really is a
"squirmer", but in general it isn't a grotequely difficult process.

well - I've always just done the pry-open-the-mouth-and-toss-the-pill-in
routine. Not a fun experience for human nor cat, but the easiest way (for
us, anyway). After the pilling, kitty always gets a reward.

Good luck, and I hope Gizmo will turn out to be okay. I've survived enough
teeth cleanings with my cats - a bit unnerving to have them put under, but
they've made it through just fine.

Yep, my Simon has needed at least one pill every day for over a
year now and the only way I can get them down is open his mouth
and put the pill as far back as I can. At 20 years old he's just
too smart to eat a pill hidden in his food, and usually manages
to spit out anything that didn't go right into the back of his
mouth. But then, at 20 years old, he hasn't got the physical
fight in him that a younger cat can have. I find kneeling down
with puss between my knees is the best way to hold on to the cat
and still have both hands free.
Here's hoping that Gizzy's feeling better soon

LOL! Isn't that just typical? Purrs for Gizmo for all she will have to
endure, and for you for the pilling. I give Frank and Nikki their thyroid
medication by crushing the pills and mixing them into sour cream, but this
only works if the pills are very bland in taste. I didn't manage to trick
Frank into taking antibiotics this way a couple of years back, so I crushed
the pills and mixed them with water, then squirted it into his mouth with a
syringe. You could try something stronger than water, like e.g. beef or fish
stock, or water from a tin of tuna.

Purrs for Gizmo to get better, and come through the teeth cleaning
with no problems.

When Rocky was at TED getting snipped he stayed two nights and one
full day, and refused to eat or use the litterbox the whole time he
was there. Once I got him home he wolved down a can of wet food, ran
outside for a few minutes. and came inside to eat some more. Crazy
cat, I still don't think he's ever used the litterbox. He's been
spending nights inside lately with our cold weather, but still wants
out first thing in the morning.
