Yikes! This would affect men too! I trim (as short as the electric
trimmer will go) the hair in my armpits for two reasons:
* the less hair I have there, the better contact my antitranspirant
makes with the skin, so less perspiration
* also, less surface area there is for bacteria to grow, thus there is
less smell

It's practical!

[painful experience snipped]

thank you for this post. I was thinking to try waxing my bikini zone. But
now, that I read your post, I will not. Thank you for preventing me:-)

I once tried the epilator on my bikini zone. I thought, I can stand it on
my arms and legs, why not there? Well, now I know, why not. It is an agony,
where I'm missing words to describe it:-( The result however, was
marvellous and the hair kept away from growing for about 6 weeks. But I
will not do it again, because I can't stand the pain.

I belong to the persons, who gets razor burns and bumps and stubble anyway.
People I asked how to prevent those nasty hair growing underneath the skin,
advised me to use a zinc ointment after shaving. I tried that as well but
my hair keeps growing underneath the skin anyway:-( Not to mention the
itch, when it starts growing.

I wish, there was a solution to that...

I have a tiny patch of hair on my chest, really pathetic, actually.
I often trim it and then give it a pass with the electric shaver. One
time I decided to try one of those "no pain" products they sell. OMG!!!
I gave myself a nasty burn that was very hard to explain at the beach a
few days later.

I usually just shave, but my daughter said waxing is *much* better

TMI! Wax is a pain (literally) Try Nair or something similar but
keep the stuff away from the cats!

As a teenager, I tried Nair once on my legs and remember

1) My legs turned red and hurt
2) No sign of it actually making any attempt at removing hair from my

Given #1, I wouldn't dare to put it near anything as sensitive as ...
eek! (Granted, it was about 15 years ago and the formula may have
improved since.)

Hmph! When my leg hair started coming in at puberty, my mother
insisted that if I shaved it would come back thicker and thicker, and
handed me the Nair.

So there I am, in the bathroom, standing with stinking, stinging
cream all over my lower legs, and with my arms up in the air so the
stinking, stinging cream could be on my pits. And I waited the
minimum 5 minutes. Nothing. At 10 minutes, still nothing. At 15
minute (the maximum time allowed) I was in so much pain it was an
incredible relief to get the bloody stuff off me (that, and I could
lower my arms, so that the feelign returned to my hands). Whilst
*some* of hte hairs looked slightly sickly, there was still an
adequately embrassing crop there. Not knowing what else to do, I
grabbed my mother's razor and removed them, not noticing the
hypocrisy of my mother having a razor but insisting I used cream.

I have no idea what sort of hair Nair works on, but it ain't mine.

I get my chin waxed now, but only because people at work stared
staring at it. Blimmin heck that hurts! One day I'll afford to get it
lasered off permamantly. I joke that the hair on my head (which is
now noticably thin at the front) fell through. Dont I just love
hormones?

Yowie

Sooooo sorry you folks had bad reactions! I guess it must be because I'm a
natural blonde, Nair and similiar products work fine on me without stinging,
burning or whatever.

I simply cannot imagine ripping dried wax off my skin, particularly in
*that* area... sorry! Actually, a razor and shaving soap work just fine for
all areas

OB Cats: Persia wanted me to wake up. I got up and fed her at 6AM and she
still has food (yay, she didn't pig it all down!) So there she goes again
with the tapping me on the nose thing. Okay, I'll get up and go check rpca,
you goofy cat Of course, the minute I got up she decided it was time to
take a nap. Goofy cat.

I tried waxing my legs once.. The next morning I work up and where ever
there used to be hair there was a bruise. I tried it a second time (yes I'm
thick) and the same thing happened. I think it's one of those things that's
either done by a professional or never done.

done.

CatNipped,

I used to do this for people a few years ago. It was one of my least
favourite jobs, the worst was waxing underarms!
The reason I disliked it so much was that I knew that no matter how well I
did the procedure, it was going to hurt!
If you are really bothered and do not have sensitive skin, I would go for
a hair removal cream from your chemist.

No, I have *extremely* sensitive skin - I have to buy soap without perfumes
or coloring and I get Lubriderm's "Seriously Sensitive" lotion. I wouldn't
want to try something on my skin that's strong enough to disolve hair.

If you do want another person to wax you, get a professional waxer to do
it. Believe me you will not be a problem, and a good one will save your
modesty by placing paper towels etc in stategic places. Your partner is
not likely to have done it as it should be done, but it did make
entertaining reading!

About how much does it cost, and how long does it last before you have to
have it done again?

It reminded me of the Mel Gibson film, 'What Women Want'. If men had to
undergo this, attitudes would change rather fast!

I *LOVE* that movie (one of the few I can watch over and over again)!

LOL. I once tried bleaching my leg hairs. I bought some stuff that
was designed specifically for that. It was weird - all the hairs on
my legs were bleached blond, but then they suddenly started growing,
and grew to about twice their normal length. I have naturally dark
hair, so within a week I had these long, two-tone hairs on my legs.

So much for that idea!

Joyce

ROTFLMAO! If you'd have left them you might have started a new fashion
trend!!! ;

This exact scenario has happened between me and Dennis on several
occasions. Usually in 3 year intervals. I think I've finally
gotten to the point where I'm not willing to try again. If only my
hair wasn't strawberry blond, I would have just had it permanently
lasered off in Thailand. But alas, I am destined to shave
forever...

Why does the color of the hair affect getting it lasered?

Dark hair transmits the laser energy to the follicle (thereby kiling
it) far better than light hair for some reason. It would be pointless
lasering blonde hair, as hte follicle just wouldn't die at a safe
level of energy.
Yowie

That's right, you explained it much better than I ever could.
Funny story. Many of my girlfriends in Bangkok were having their bikini
line lasered, it was really cheap. I explained why I couldn't have it
done, but expressed confusion over how my friend Meghan could do it
because she's a redhead too. In typical southern American fashion, she
said to me: "Girlfriend, my luggage doesn't match!"
Got a good laugh out of that one!

Made me laugh too.

Oh, did it make for entertaining reading! I was laughing and laughing - no
offense Catnipped, but the way you told the story was hilarious! I had to
read parts of it to my husband. Sorry for your discomfort, but you wrote
beautifully.
