Kidney values question
Hi everyone,
Six months ago, my brothers cat had some bloodwork done and it showed that both her urea and creatinine values were slightly elevated. Her urea was 11.2 mmol/L (normal is 4-10.7). Her creatinine was 196 umol/L (normal is 50-177). So we took action by switching her to a special kidney diet (Medical Reduced Protein, a Canadian food very similar to Hills k/d). It should also be mentioned that she is hyperthyroid with a value of 62.1 nmol/L (normal is 12.9 - 51.5). She is NOT being treated for this thyroid problem. The doctor said it's probably helping her kidneys more than anything, and treating it may make her kidneys worse. So this month we took her back to get her values retested. Her urea came out a high normal at 10.0 and her creatinine as well with a 155. What came as very odd, is that her thyroid came out normal at 24.1. The doctor said this was very unusual and he didn't have any explanation. Only that lab error may have had a role. So I was wondering if anyone could tell me what we can expect for her in terms of prognosis in the future? Has anyone had similar levels in their pet? If so, how did they do? Is it possible to maintain these levels just on the kidney diet? Does anyone have any other insights into what we can expect for this kitty in the future? Thanks Kelly |
