I had to deal with a similar situation. I'm still not sure she
understands. What she does understand is cuddles. Her reaction is 'Oh
god, the human is doing this again. If I wait paitently, he will stop
and then I will beg for ice cubes'.

Sometimes she gets confused as whether she meant to beg for ice cubes
(she loves licking them) or noms to eat.

What are "noms" *?

Jay (trying to learn cat language)

Stuff fuzzy kitties enjoy eating.

As in "nom, nom, nom, nom".

She's being "Good" with me okay I do not wish to imply in any way that

I've tried throwing her toys- she loves to play usually but she bats
it once or twice for show and then walks off

The only good thing is she's still eating but even then when I put her
food down she waits and looks round to see if Dunzi is going to appear

How can I explain it to her?

I'm away on vacation and not really able to keep up with the group so
please pardon my late comment. It doesn't always work out this way,
but when Bushkey died I actually took Nico (his brother) to the vet to
view the body. I was worried about exactly this situtation: I didn't
want him wondering what happened. Nico sniffed him a bit and literally
jumped back, Then I took him home.

He didn't look for Bushkey although he clearly missed him. I think
cats understand death in some way. Whenever possible with my
subsequent cats, I try to do the same thing..

Too late for Sarsi, and I echo the idea to get a new friend for her.
But for others facing this situation (and we all do of course),
viewing of the body does seem to help.

Yes, we too allow our clowder a "viewing of the body" and they do seem to
understand when one of our masters crosses to the Bridge. Since we own our
home and have a back yard, we're able to bury our poor little ones.
Actually the previous owners were kind enough to let us bury Percy here
before we moved in (both husband and wife were "shepherds" to a religious
community and the wife was home and came out to say a prayer over his grave
after we'd finished burying him) - so we even have him here with us also.

Those living in apartments or condos don't have that privilege and often
have no other option but to have their former masters' remains cremated and
I don't think cats' understanding would go far enough to cover that
contingency. Sarsi will come around soon I'm sure - we're still sending
soothing / healing purrs to Lesley and Dave and Sarsi.

So nice to have relatives with large yards living here; my beloveds I
brought here
with me have all gone RB but no problem giving their remains a
dignified burial in
the earth; relatives, two sets with severe cat allergies, just roll
their eyes at my sad
entreaty for Backyard Ceremonies in every instance so far, and one set
even did my
digging for me. What else are relatives for besides providing burial
grounds so you
don't have to prepare beloved companions for Wast Management disposal?
Besides, one group keeps *rats* as pets. We had a lotta LOLs about
"snacks for
Snaggly" about these rodents but I am beginning to warm up to the rats.

Smells. Is there a toy or a blanket or something that smells like the
departed animal? Clean and or get rid of it. I'd bet ten bucks the
confused kitty is getting hit in the face with smells of Their Friend
and is becoming confused.

As both cats had the run of the flat I'd be faced with cleaning/
getting rid of pretty much everything.

Sarsi seems to be going through periods when she brightens up a lot.
Yesterday she managed to opent the drawer holding her fether onna
stick (The fether's have long gone it's not just a bit of elastic on
the end of the pole but she loves playing with it) and drag it out and
played madly, this morning once she got up she was bouncing around
like a mad kitten.

She's done one strange thing, she's gathered all her toys that she
could together and put them under the computer desk when I found them
I took out her Santa and threw it for her and she caught it, put it
back with the others then sat there guarding them like she was afraid
I would make them vanish as well

I've heard from several people that rats are really smart and make wonderful

A friend of mine runs a rat rescue (she also somehow ended up rescuing
2 chincillas and some ferrets but some people don;t know the
difference apparently and she wouldn't turn an animal in need away-
she also has a cat) and she swears they are great pets

I really do not need this!

Dunzi died of either an infection and/or cancer- now it may sound
cruel to say I hope it was cancer but that's because cancer is not
infectious and an infection by its very definition is infectious

Sarsi has the runs big time! She flooded her litter tray with it, she
seems okay maybe it's something she ate (but she's only eaten wet and
dry cat fudz unless she got into the bins and they are not knocked
over) she seems okay but I am watching her like hawk and wondering
whether she may have to go to the vet tomorrow and hoping she hasn't
got the same thing....I could do with some purrs here I can't bear
losing both of them so closely together

Lesley,

First, BIG PURRS for Sarsi to be OK! I can see why you're alarmed.

You didn't ask for advice, but:

I think you should take her to the vet ASAP. She may be fine, but
better to waste a vet visit than the other way around. Infections can
usually be treated successfully.

Please keep us posted.
