Abelard is near death
For the last few hours he's been breathing fast and growing weaker. He
couldn't stand long enough in the litter box 3 hours ago to finish peeing, and now he can't hold up his head. He won't even swallow water for me. I just put in a few drops at a time on his tongue. He's barely conscious. I see him slipping away and am unable to help him. I pray he doesn't go into seizures again. There are no vets available except at the emergency clinic in Springfield, the roads are icy, the drunks are out, and it costs $200 just to walk in the door at the EVC. What would you do? I feel like dying right along with my baby boy. Merry Christmas. |

I wish I had done that instead of hauling Princess (RB16) off to the emergency Vet. "....Rise up slowly, Angel...." It's hard to let you go. MLB |

My son's Dog had a seizure and passed immediately. As I remember, my cousins dog did too. It is hard, I know, but this is a natural ending to life for all living things and it is happening all over the world. When my mother died, a poem entitled "A Christmas Death" was read at the funeral. I wish I had a copy -- it was beautiful. Our thoughts, purrs and prayers are with you. MLB |

I feel like dying right along with my baby boy. Merry Christmas. I'm so sorry. It seemed so hopeful just a day ago. I'm afraid if it were me, I would be rushing him to the vet over icy roads and shelling out the money, because I'm prone to panic and I'd be too flipped out to do anything else. But that doesn't mean that's what you should do. I just don't understand why the vet didn't send you home with subq fluids to administer to him at home, considering how dehydrated he was. If a cat's not feeling well, they might not drink water, no matter how badly they need it. But they can't stop subq fluids from entering their body, and in his condition he wouldn't be able to stop you from giving it to him. I hope he makes it through the night and that you can find a vet that's open in the morning. Purrs for both of you. Joyce |

I honestly think that if he's dying and he's warm and with people he loves, there's no need to beat yourself up that you can't get him to the vet. He's had a hard time of it lately, and has come to the end of his life. I hope that he passes quickly, for your sake and his. Jeanette |

He's still in the bed, warm as toast. I could not rouse him at all but he's breathing *extremely* fast and shallow. Seemed like 2-3 breaths per second. Like really fast panting. Yet he is out of it, doesn't seem conscious at all. |

You've been giving him fluids from a bag attached to a hose, with a needle at the other end, that gets stuck under his skin? That's what I mean by "subq" fluids (short for "subcutaneous"). In my experience, that is the best way to keep a cat hydrated when there are problems with this, whether because of kidney failure or because the cat has been without water for a while, or in your case, because the cat is refusing food and water.
