Yikes! I guess they're experts, but I would get a second opinion. Is there
a TurboTax version for small businesses (you guys do have your own
company, right?)? That would be an inexpensive way of checking that.

Our own company - yes and no. I work for a company but I do web
architecture on the side. That was yet another reason we got hit so hard
this year - a company filed a tax form on me when they really didn't have to
and *I* had to pay extra for it to the IRS! Again, SHEESH!!!

Hugs,

CatNipped

That sucks!

Last year was the first year I had to pay money--sure, the one year
I'm unemployed is the year I owe. Wouldn't you know it.

Yeah, that's what puzzled me. I was on unemployment for 4 months last year,
and changed jobs taking a cut in pay to *half* what I was making. I figured
that even with the IRA withdrawal I wouldn't have to *pay*, much less pay
almost $5,000! After hearing the things I've heard about H&R Block I'm
thinking about letting my genius DH loose on the internet to see if he can
figure out if H&R Block screwed up!

Hugs,

CatNipped

I should've broken even, but they figured my taxes at Nova Scotia
rates even though I'd only been in Nova Scotia for 4 of the 12 months.
Had they allowed me Ontario rates for the 8 months I'd been in
Ontario, I'd have gotten money back.

Taxes BLOW.

My sympathies. In the robust economy days of the last administration, I
was being routinely shafted like that due to mutual fund income that I
never really saw - the proverbial paper profits. Now, as I've kept
extreme overwithholding, I get a lot back each year. (I'm taking the day
off work today to do taxes, but would rather read the newsgroup).

The very first time I had to pay extra was for the State of Michigan,
where I was living in the mid 70's. I took an old dress shirt and a Magic
Marker, and wrote on the shirt in big letters: "You took everything else;
take my shirt, too!". Stuffed it into a big envelope with the tax return,
and sent it off.

Probably was routine to them, but it made me feel better.

When you get a lot back, it means the gov't has had the use of your money
without interest. I try to fix mine to just have to pay some on April 15.

I got taken really bad once, but it was from bad advice of two CPAs

Best of luck to all of you "last minute" struggelers MLB

Sorry you don't get to gripe on this one. You are supposed to pay taxes on
all the money you receive for work you do. Whether the person/company files
a 1099 form or not. Not reporting what you receive is cheating on your
taxes. Sorry.

Had a client one year who was all ****ed off cause the residential lawn work
he did for a realtor's personal home got reported on a business 1099.
Client had not planed to report the income. Had to tell him, sorry you got
out cheated.

I'd sure recommend doing so. Or try TurboTax.

I'm lucky - my mom is an enrolled agent, so does my taxes every year.

Oh, no - I didn't mean I didn't want to pay taxes I really owe, but if you
make less than $500.00 on a job the person paying you does not have to
submit that tax form and you *legally* don't have to pay taxes. At least
that's what the (admittedly not too informed) tax rep at H&R Block told me.
She said that since they *did* turn in the form I had to pay the taxes (or
some other penalty or fee).

I report *ALL* my income, even when it's paid to me in cash - I *DON'T* mess
with the IRS!! ;

Yes, but at the same time, some people will just spend money if they
have it available. So, having a tax refund is a good way to have
money for stuff that normal people would just save for.

Sorry to burst your bubble. But the hell you don't.. Everyone is required
to pay tax on ALL their income. If anyone at HR Blockheads told you
otherwise they should be reported to management (and the IRS) immediately.

You are lucky. Many EA's are better qualitied to do taxes than a lot of
CPA's
