Persia and the Sofa (pic)
Persia never paid much attention to the sofa in the formal living room.
(My computer is in the corner of the living room.) In the last month or so, she's decided that sofa is a nice place for a nap. I quite agree! http://s1342.photobucket.com/user/ji...ff38c.jpg.html She's napping there now, as a matter of fact. Curled into a ball with a paw draped over her face. She's so sweet. Notice the sofa is mostly white? I don't care. I have a vacuum cleaner attachment for removing pet fur from furniture. When I first brought Persia here, Mom had me drape a sheet over the sofa so Persia wouldn't "stain it". I know she was talking about shedding, not about urination. I obliged, but it was unnecessary. Persia never showed the slightest interest in that sofa. Why would she? No one ever sat in the living room. LOL Jill |

She looks almost like Holly did when she would curl up on the sofa. I know Persia is almost the color of a Russian blue, not black like Holly, but there is a similarity in the picture. MaryL |

Big waste of unused space if you ask me. There was always one of those rooms when we were kids. For "company". Jill |

My grandparents lives about 150 miles from us. We'd go up for an occasional weekend. We children were never allowed in the living room most of the time. However, after dinner, we all went into the living room for a while. The front door, which opened into the living room, was never opened. If you wanted to go into the house, you had to go in the back door. Joy |

My Father was raised in Chicago, and his Parents and many family members lived there. We visited a few times, and it was always a bit strange (this was the 50s thru the 80s). They seemed to live in the kitchen mostly, and only holidays and formal events got to use the living room. Like with your experience, most visitors came in thru the back door and stairs, the front door was almost never used. This was people with mostly Irish heritage (2nd generation American mostly), and a bit of Scottish, and from what I've read, not unusual for those areas even today, if you're not in the modern big cities. I don't know where my grandmother got the custom. She was from Nebraska, but lived in California all of my life. Her heritage was British. Joy |

My grandparents lived next door to each other in a small town in Ohio. (Dad married the girl next door.) Neither of them had a separate formal living room, which is what my parents always had. When people at grandma's house (either one) weren't in the kitchen or dining room, they gathreed in the living room. But yes, people entered from the back or side door, not from the front. Those doors entered onto a landing below the kitchen. A "mudroom". This was the place to wipe your feet or take off your galoshes before walking up into the kitchen. The houses my parents rented, bought, or built in my memory always had a separate *formal* living room. Supposed to be somewhat sacrosanct. There was always a separate "den" where there was more casual furniture. That's where we'd all hang out and watch TV and talk after dinner. The silly fancy living rooms were rarely used. Persia's using this living room and the sofa. I am too, since my desk is in the corner. But no, I don't sit around in here in the pink wing-back chairs. Sometimes I sit on the sofa next to Persia and give her some scritches. It's perfectly fine with me if she snoozes on the sofa. Jill |

I'm enjoying this corner of the living room at my desk where I can see the birds out the window. Persia and I meet in the middle to play or for a brushing session. If it weren't for Persia I'd have no reason at all to sit on that sofa. Nor anywhere else in this living room. It's a rather formal room. But there's room for kitty toys. Jill |
