Getting 2nd kitten as companion to my kitty
As some know, we have rescued a sweet 6 month old kitten and have named her Isis (why? Because like all cats, she knows she is a goddess and is to be worshipped!). So, now she wants to play. ALL the time. When I'm sleeping. She comes into the bedroom and licks my toes, fingers, nose, sits on me, does gymnastics, etc. until I get up to entertain her. I have to shut the door to get more than 2 hours rest and then she is so sad being left outside. She needs a playmate! Plus, we're used to having 2 cats anyway. (We lost both our old cats in July, one to kidney failure at age 22 and one at age 14 to a bad cancer. Strange, but probably merciful to them, how they went almost together. They were long time friends.) So, what's best? I'm considering trying to find a younger (say 3 month) neutered male kitten from a shelter. Younger so she won't be so threatened. She's basically affectionate and docile but that's with humans. With other cats, I dunno. We've done all the preliminary stuff: taken her to the vet, she's been spayed, vaccinated, evaluated, etc. She's healthy, although she is convinced that we just don't get it about letting her go back outside...she just can't understand why we make her stay inside all the time. (BAD neighborhood for cats, frequent road pizza.) What do you all think? A baby cat? A 1 year old? One her own age? What will work? Don't want to bring a kitten in just to be picked on all the time but she really needs someone to play with more than just me and the husband. Thanks. __________________________________________________ _ Camilla Cracchiolo Registered Nurse Los Angeles, California webpage temporarily down |

It's working out great. They still tag team me in the mornings to get out of bed & feed them.... Of course, there were issues at first... See my entry under ranee's heading 'Lucky is acting Territorial'... That little trick solved the problem. They are certainly less demanding on me & I can ski all day & work all night with a cleaner concience. It's so nice when I come home & they are curled up together sleeping & grooming eachother... I think it's a good call. -- Mathew Butler to 2 kittens: Chablis & Muscat En Vino Veritas |

Try one around her own age. She's still young and adapable and will
definitely see the advantages in a playmate. I wouldn't worry about the gender - I have two same-age females and they do fine together - just look for a compatible temperament. |
