She probably doesn't think about it, because she can just run to the

store/vet and get more of it. Pretty annoying though, from your

perspective. Wonder if her vet would allow you to pick some up and charge

her account? I know mine would, but we have a pretty lengthy relationship,

and he knows who watches my kids.

We use the same vet. But I'm not sure she has an "account" for them to

charge. I'll have to call to find out. Of course it's Saturday, so they

closed at 2 o'clock and they aren't open on Sunday. There's enough of the

food to last through the next week if I dish it out judiciously. I just

think it's inconsiderate of her to not have enough food on hand. She asked

me to cat sit nearly a month ago. She should have planned better.

Jill

Jill,

Didn't mean to imply that it wasn't poor judgement. I just know that when I'm "going away", I always think I've got everything covered, even using a check list, and there is always something (unfortunately it isn't always the same thing) that I have forgotten.

I don't have an "account" per se, but I do have an understanding with my vet, that if there is an emergency (or the babies need *something*) that my 'sitter' can get it or bring them in, and I'll pay for it when I get back. Only because I worry more about them than I do about me, I've always worked this out with my varying vets (it's a deciding factor when I change vets).

Same here. I have always paid cash (actually, by check), so I don't have an
"account" set up for paying bills. However, I once asked my vet if I would
be able to make arrangements at the reception desk so my pet sitter could
bring Holly or Duffy in for treatment, if needed. He said, "Yes." Then he
smiled and said, "Of course, we would take care of them anyway--without any
special arrangements."

Agree. When someone else is taking care of my kids I make sure to have
plenty because for some reason they never put out what I say to put out
and put out more. Even my mom and I was here! She kept asking why they
weren't eating it all and I said because she's putting out too much. She
insisted she followed instructions but I could see the level of the
container going down faster than it does when I feed them. Not saying
you put out more than instructed, but just saying that I always make
sure to have extra just in case. Hope it works out with the vet!

My vet allows the same arrangement. I wrote up a letter for them to put
in my cat's files along with the name of my pet sitter stating that
whatever care they feel is necessary if I'm unable to be contacted when
my cats are in the care of the sitter that they are authorized to do so
and I'd pay when I get back. It even includes euthenasia if my vet
feels that is the only hope. That one was a tough one to authorize but
I wouldn't want a very sick and/or in pain cat waiting for my
authorization. I'd sure hate it if it comes to that but I trust the
judgement of my sitter and vet and they know I don't put dollar limits
on treating them.

She should make certain there is enough food so you can take care of them.
When I was in hospital there was enough food to take care of Boyfie for
months.
What to do about it? You'll have to buy some and tell her you won't look
after the cats again if she doesn't make sure there is enough prescription
food to last. It's not on to have you worry about buying their food.

Especially since it's prescription food. If it were ordinary cat food,
you could just go to a grocery store and have her pay you back when she
gets home. A cat on prescription food needs extra care!

Exactly, Joyce. I'm not sure I could pick up prescription food for her
cats. (I actually buy Persia's R/x food from a different vet. They
wouldn't sell it to me until her regular vet faxed over a prescription.
This vet charges less - for the food - and it's not as far to drive.)
I think I can stretch this to make it last. But if I have to, I'll
see if she'll call the vet and "authorize" me picking up a bag of the
R/x food.

She was very specific about how much food to put in the bowls each day.
Of course, as a responsible cat sitter, I follow her instructions to
the letter. I do understand what you're saying, though.

I think she's going to run out of kitty litter, too. They are
indoor-outdoor cats, but it's been raining so much they've mostly been
staying in. They're using the litter box a lot more than if they were
outside all day long. I'm scooping it twice a day.
