NINETEEN THINGS THAT IT TOOK ME 50 YEARS TO LEARN

1. Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on
the
same night.

2. If you had to identify, in one word, the reason why the human race has
not
achieved, and never will achieve, its full potential, that word would be
"meetings."

3. There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness."

4. People who want to share their religious views with you almost never want
you
to share yours with them.

5. And when God ( what ever you believe in ), who created the entire
universe with all of its glories,
decides to deliver a message to humanity, He WILL NOT use, as His messenger,
a
person on cable TV with a bad hairstyle.

6. You should not confuse your career with your life.

7. No matter what happens, somebody will find a way to take it too
seriously.

8. When trouble arises and things look bad, there is always one individual
who
perceives a solution and is willing to take command. Very often, that
individual
is crazy.

9. Nobody cares if you can't dance well. Just get up and dance.

10. Never lick a steak knife.

11. Take out the fortune before you eat the cookie.

12. The most destructive force in the universe is gossip.

13. You will never find anybody who can give you a clear and compelling
reason
why we observe daylight savings time.

14. You should never say anything to a woman that even remotely suggests
that
you think she's pregnant unless you can see an actual baby emerging from her
at
that moment.

15. There comes a time when you should stop expecting other people to make a
big
deal about your birthday. That time is age eleven.

16. The one thing that unites all human beings, regardless of age, gender,
religion, economic status or ethnic background, is that, deep down inside,
we
ALL believe that we are above average drivers.

17. The main accomplishment of almost all organized protests is to annoy
people
who are not in them.

18. A person who is nice to you, but rude to the waiter, is not a nice
person.
(This is very important. Pay attention. It never fails.)

19. Your friends love you anyway.

I wish someone would have told this one to Indiana's Governor, Mitch
Daniels. We have now adopted to DST, and as soon as they decide whether we
will be on Eastern or Central time, we will have to start changing our
clocks 2x yearly.

I liked it the way we were - in the summer, we were on Central time, winter
we were equal to Eastern. sigh What a pain!

Are you saying that at the beginning of the winter, you'd push your clocks
one hour *ahead*? And then one hour *back* in spring? What was the reason
for that?

No - *we*, here in the central (90% of the) state of Indiana, don't change
our clocks at all. Back ages ago, when DST was "installed" upon the masses,
our fine forefathers/mothers decided that, since we were on the border of
Eastern & Central times, to not adopt the DST standard, and we went on
Central time - however, when the rest of the country 'falls back' in the
fall/winter, we end up equal with the Eastern TZ. In the spring/summer,
when everyone else (except for those in some areas of Arizona, who, like us,
opted *out* of DST) pushed their clocks forward an hour, we are again in
sync (hahahaha I made a funny) with the Central time zones. This was
apparently confusing for those outside the state of Indiana (whatever for?
All they had to do when talking to us on the phone or via IM is to *ask* us
what time it is, and we would gladly say it's #:## o'clock, and they could
figure it out from there, if they knew how to engage their brains), so now
the powers that be (not necessarily the more intelligent ones, wither, from
what I can tell), have opted for Indiana to adopt the DST practices, but
they have yet to decided whether we will be on Eastern (along with NYC,
Detroit, Cincinnati & Louisville) or Central (as is Chicago) or if they will
do like they did with Kentucky and Tennessee, and split the state down the
middle, eastern half being on Eastern, and western half being on Central.

Did I confuse you more? if not, anyone else care to add anything to help
confuse the issue?

No, that made more sense, thanks. You're just saying that when people
in the Eastern zone changed *their* clocks, they were then in sync with
*you*.

Is this why TV shows in the Central time zone are always on earlier?
I grew up (in Massachusetts) always hearing that a show would be on at
"9PM - 8PM Central". I still hear that in California.

No, it's because 9PM Eastern time *IS* 8PM Central time! ;

That doesn't make sense. Why wouldn't people in Central time want to
watch a show at 9PM *their* time? It's a taped show, so local stations
and network affiliates can show it whenever they like.

Besides, I still hear this in California (ie, "9PM - 8PM Central"), and
9PM California time is 11PM Central. By your logic, the show should be on
at 6PM in California!

(Which is exactly what happens when they show the Oscars, since that is
live. It starts at 6PM in LA, but that means 9PM on the east coast. 9-11
or midnight seems like a civilized hour for a TV show. So when I first
moved here, I couldn't get used to it being on so early in the evening.
I haven't even started dinner at 6!)

Which is why I liked being on Central time in the summer - the local
stations broadcast shows on *our* time - but with the DirecTV satellite, we
used toe be able to get Eastern broadcast stations (don't any more), and
their shows were always on an hour *later* than ours! that way we could
watch shows that were on competing stations... weird.

But now we only get IN stations, *but* all the "cable" stations (Animal
Planet, FOX news, CNN, Discovery, SciFi & all that) are on Eastern time (but
most send out 2 signals, one for Eastern, one for Pacific, DirecTV sends you
the one you are closest to), so we can still watch "My Wife & Kids" on ABC,
and Mythbusters on Discovery, both on Wed night, 8m "Eastern" time.

I don't know for sure, but I would imagine that there are a number of TV
stations that service both Eastern and Central time zones (population
density being more concentrated here, maybe?) and it's just easier to set
the line-up for both. But once you get to Mountain and Pacific times the
shows would be coming on too early for viewer convenience.
