FDA to test food glutens for contamination
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070424/...d_testing_dc_1
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said on Tuesday it will test imports of wheat gluten, corn gluten, corn meal, soy protein, rice bran and rice protein concentrate to detect any contamination with melamine. The materials are used to manufacture both human and livestock feed, the FDA said. "We're going to target firms that we know are receiving imported products," said David Acheson, chief medical officer of the FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. "The goal is obviously to sample as much as we can." Melamine, used in plastics and fertilizer, was recently found in wheat gluten and rice protein, both used in some U.S. pet foods. (I agree a lot of the "doctored" food products we find in grocery stores these days bear similarities, but that's the first time I've seen anyone admit it! |

If you had ever had the privilege of eating wheat gluten products on a regular basis, you would find the notion of calling it human feed appropriate. It is used in fake hamburger in particular. As well as fake chicken and seafood. Jo |

Have a look round a shop catering to bodybuilders sometime. Enormous tins of purified protein and the like. I have even seen one labelled RAW GLANDS. Allow me to admit that I really *like* the "fake meat" dishes in Chinese food that use wheat gluten as substitutes. There are a few vegetarian Chinese restaurants in my area that use it and I've always enjoyed it. Not as a meat substitute, since I also eat meat. I just like it as a food in its own right (I can hear the jeers now ). Of course, I won't be eating any wheat gluten anywhere, until it can be proven beyond a doubt that it's not contaminated! Joyce I used to like the fake scallops. Dipped in egg and then breadcrumbs and fried. They didn't much taste like scallops but at the time I'd never tasted a scallop. And I didn't hate the "choplets", a sort of brown disc that was heated and served with gravy. Just seems to me that Karma is being mean when first its the organic spinach and then the wheat gluten that have turned deadly. I won't be eating any more wheat gluten either, but that is because I finally learned I'm allergic to wheat gluten in such a concentrated form. No wonder I always had allergies at Grandma's house.
