When you get tired of playing with the cat and spot, establish a "home"
for your spot. Under a sofa cushion is good. Take your spot and "put it
to bed" there. After a few times, you can ask your cat if he wants to
see if spot is awake, and he'll probably go and wait for you to lift up
the cushion.

It's funny, two of my cats are really love chasing the laser pointer dot,
two like to watch it, but not actively chase, and one could care less. The
two that love playing laser pointer come running when I pick it up. It's on
a keychain, so it jingles when I pick it up. They will come running from
anywhere in the house. When I'm done playing, I usually make it dissapear
into a corner or under the counter so it looks like it went somewhere.
