Mowing the grass, so to speak!

I planted grass inside once and used one of those round trays that goes under a big potted plant. When the grass got sort of tall, my cats would take turns lying in it, smashing it all down. Then a while later I noticed no one was lying in it or even eating it. A couple days later, it started turning yellow and dying in a big spot, and I knew someone had no doubt peed in it. That was the end of that. They didn't need it anyway, they're inside/supervised outside cats, and can eat grass when they need to. It's just a friend had given me the cat grass seeds, and I thought 'what the heck, might as well try it out'. -bonbon |

I used to use rectangular planters in rotation: one on the low window shelf for the cats and two under lights where the cats couldn't get too them. Yes, they lie down in the planter, and even argue over gets to lie down when. I tried everything: spikes, metal mesh that the grass could grow through (that sort of worked), and several other things. What actually worked best was moving to the country and installing a cat flap so the cats could come and go as they want. Fortunately, there are few stray cats, and the neighborhood cats that come over here are friendly ... and my alpha male is so huge that his very presence deters aggressive strays. -- T.E.D. ) |

leave th e camera on the window sill next to hte grass pot?
Sounds like a great camera moment. Glad you shared. -- Christopher A. Young Learn more about Jesus www.lds.org www.mormons.com "CATherine" wrote in message ... Awhile back, i decided my cats are going to be indoor-only cats. Hard lines for Robin. I suspect he was raised outdoors. But he gets little wounds from fighting with a stray cat or whatever. After the last one took a long time to heal, that was it. Now his "outdoors" will be the enclosed porch. That is wild enough. And it even has a mouse highway where the little boogers try to come in and homestead every fall! The cats love that. But one day I realized I needed to provide them with grass since they could no longer get any outside grass. So i went to Petsmart and bought a small dish of a little bit of potting soil and soome various grass seeds with it. After reading the directions--Poke hiles in bottom of cup-sized dish, plant seeds, cover with lid and soak in water for awhile. I looked at the pitiful amount of loose soil and the small dish. I thought to myself, the grass won't be an inch tall before the cats will rip it right out of that soil. Too loose and shallow to anchor the plants. And way too many seeds for that small pot. So I got a good-sized ceramic patio pot and put in a lot of regular garden soil, planted only half the seeds, poured the loose potting soil on top (which barely covered the pot) and watered it gooe. A few days later i had grass. I took the plastic cover off and put the pot on the cats' table. (Yes, my cats have their own table in front of the window, complete with fountain and grass!!) It wasn't anytime before Robin found the grass. It was opnly an inch tall. Robin tasted a few leaves, accidentally mangling a few blades. So i covered it again for a couple of days. It grows really fast. This time Robin bit some inch-long tips off and left them lying there. Darn! So i covered it again. Another couple days and Robin actually ate a couple blades! So i put the plastic cover away. Earlier he had evidently been taste testing it for eating ripeness. :-)) Trouble is, he now thinks the pot of grass is his. Sheba and Djoser have discovered it; but they are wary of Robin finding them there. One day Robin and Djoser were having a fist fight across the pot! With three cats visiting the grass pot and having fist fights over it, the grass is getting to looking bedraggled. But it is still growing faster than they are eating it. That was a lot of seed I planted. Now I am wishing, like so many of us, that I had an instant camera fastened to my forehead!! I went to the bedroom door and immediately turned to Jeff and whispered "get the camera Right Now!" Before he got into position, another Kodak moment was lost. Djoser had been standing on the rim of the pot with all four feet and burying his nose in the grass. It was an adorable picture. I thought briefly about planting a larger pot of grass; but decided they would probably lie in it and smash the grass or dig in it for you know what. -- CATherine |

When I planted cat grass, our guys exhumed all the dirt onto the rug
for fun. BAD BITTIES. I finally had to put the catgrass on the fridge and harvest samples of it for them from time to time. It's all died off now though, since it was too dark up there.... Now my guys don't get fresh grass... Is it good for them? --Fil |
