Ankle purrs
We've been having yet more "fun" with Dave's district nurses. We had
a temp who put his stockings on so badly he had to take them off so the temp put him back in compression bandaging as a precaution but completely forgot to check the stock levels here so finally ran out and put him in crepe bandages. At this point one of the expert nurses came round, said the crepe was useless, the stockings we'd finally got in July- 11 months after they were first proposed- weren't the right ones and she''d do a prescription for the right ones (They zip up so he can get them on and off- the other ones even with a slide were hard to put on and remove) which should only take a week so it was agreed since the right ones weren't here, we'd leave it and he'd have to call if things started to hurt. Well that was 6 weeks ago and after about a week Dave was worried about the skin so we made 25-30 attempts to call, We left voicemails, only once did I get through and speak to a district nurse who promised someone would come round in the most apathetic tones, we called the out of hours service who promised someone would call us from the day service.....no one did. It got so bad Dave tracked down the expert nurse via her "Facebook" account- if she wasn't on there then we'd probably still be trying to speak to someone. She went ballistic as she found her prescription for the new stockings was never submitted and we had a nurse come round who agreed Dave's ankle was swollen, made a note of what supplies were needed then vanished promising to get the supplies..... Guess what? 2 weeks later no supplies, Dave had to Facebook the nurse again last week. He got a phone call the other day from the lymphoedema nurse specialist- we've only just found out there is one when Vicky (expert nurse) says Dave should have been referred to her as soon as his ulcer settled down in September.....That's September 2007 by the way! The zip up stockings have been put on the back burner until Dave's been assessed so we are back to where we were 2 years ago! She asked us to bring the notes and said Dave had been really let down by the district nursing team- she wants him to make an official complaint and this time he's going to His appointment is tomorrow morning....at Thames House...I'm charging the electric cattle prod to get him in there but he has to go as his right ankle where he had the ulcer before has been getting more painful and is starting to ooze. So could anyone spare a few purrs that it isn't another ulcer or if it is that it can be halted in its tracks and we can get this sorted out? Lesley Slave of the Fabulous Furballs |

Lesley Slave of the Fabulous Furballs Purrs for Dave's ankle to get better soon. Also for the care he's receiving to be top-notch and that he won't fight you too hard about going to the appointment. Lesley Slave of the Fabulous Furballs Ah the joys of socialized medicine. Lots of purrs and healing wishes and thoughts for our Dave. Also purrs and good thoughts and wishes for getting the nurses sorted out and a worried Lesley reassured. Pine Cone has offered to come over there and take care of those nurses. I suspect he's been watching to many mafia movies again. Pam S. |

Ankle purrs (Update)
We got into Thames House without my resulting to the electric cattle prod and were told to sit in the day room as the person we needed to see wasn't there yet.....Thames House now has a 44 inch plasma TV and the inmates were watching Jeremy Kyle....I'd heard it was bad but THAT bad! After an hour I asked what was going on and it turned out the nurse stuck her head in the day room but didn't call Dave's name out then went back to her office to call him and ask why he wasn't there! Anyway we had a number of options- one of which was 2 weeks as an inpatient on Jubilee Ward, which is a geriatric unit- Dave blanched and I suspect if the patients on Jubilee Ward had heard that suggestion they would as well. Turns out the zip up stockings are no good either- what is really needed is for me to be shown how to take the hosiery on and off- an idea first mooted in 2006 but whilst I have said if they show me what to do I can do it- none of them ever did. We've settled on a very intensive programme where for the next 3 Mondays at least I have to get Dave down to Thames House in the morning and on Wednesdays and Fridays he has the district nurses come round but at least this time they'll be supervised, the idea is on a Monday Katrina (boss nurse) will assess things and then tell the district nurses what needs to be done for the rest of the week. If all goes well 2 weeks today she will measure him for custom hosiery then on week 3 we'll be fitting them. Turns out a lot of the problem is footwear- when Dave left hospital he was wearing those all purpose velcro sandals then a few months later we got referred to the footwear service who gave him a new pair of them and a catalogue of very expensive like eighty pounds + postage shoes with no refunds. I;'d have happily (Well moderately happily) paid but we didn't know Dave's shoe size. Katrina says that was not acceptable and at some point the district nurses should have referred him back just like they could her referred her to her service which started 18 months ago! So once again Dave has been let down twice! Turns out the footwear is probably aggravating/causing the problems as no-one can walk properly in those sandals and that affects the way your foot moves, which pumps lymph back up (We know this bit if Dave isn't walking normally then it makes his lymphoedema worse) so we're hoping once he's in hosiery again we can get that sorted out (I really should not be rude about his last visit through- the orthoptist said slip on shoes are worse for supporting feet and no-one should really wear them- I've been having problems with pain and instability on my right ankle- where Dunzi tripped me up and I remembered that and got some very sensible lace up shoes with heel and ankle supports in them and it made a huge difference very quickly) Also we're getting the transport problem worked on, we saw Coco who was such a help before and he says he will get Dave on a plane! Well I think he could get on a plane but until we get the problem sorted he can't get on a bus, which on a day to day basis is probably more important. The best news is in another week he would probably have an ulcer but right now he only has the start of one so we may avert that disaster.....Through what my boss is going to make of my needing 2 Monday mornings off in the next 3 weeks (One of them I am on leave anyway) is anyone's guess especially as our office manager just put in a certificate for another 4 weeks and I am covering for her and have been for the last 3 months...Well if I have to take leave paid for unpaid it's not a consideration. It finally looks like after about 2 years of messing about we might be back on track! Lesley Slave of the Fabulous Furballs |
