[OT] fridge life of cooked mushrooms?
About a week ago we added sauteed green onions and mushrooms, as well
as grilled bell peppers and zucchini, to spaghetti sauce (the kind in a plastic jar). I was thinking that with no meat, it would still be good, but someone told me that mushrooms go bad in 2-3 days. Thoughts? Do I need to toss all that sauce? -- monique, who spoils Oscar unmercifully pictures: http://www.bounceswoosh.org/rpca |

I never keep anything longer than 3 days in the refrigerator. If you have leftovers suitable for freezing that will last a few months. MLB |

"Monique Y. Mudama" wrote someone told me that mushrooms go bad in 2-3 days. They might last 3-4 days if the fridge is real cold and the shrooms were not left out very long after being cooked. |

It would make me uneasy as I wouldn't be sure just how long the meat had been in the fridge before it went into the sauce. Jo |

Oh dear. I keep spaghetti sauce in the fridge up to a week, shrooms, meat and all. So do I. Tomato sauce is an unfriendly environment for bacteria, anyway. But I keep a lot of other things for longer than a few days. Once it gets to be more than a week old, then I check it carefully before eating it. At some point, it just gets dumped. I'm actually quite lazy about cleaning my fridge, and every so often I have to dump out unrecognizable items, container and all. Joyce |

But they I have a short memory and a weak stomach so that's in the interest of safety. More than four days and I'm not sure of origin date. And Charlie will eat anything that is in the refrigerator, so I have to be kind of careful about long term residents. Both my daughters have been told if I die first to clean out the refrigerator for him once in a while. Then again, he seems to be able to eat darn near anything without problems. He has eaten in street markets all over the world during his time in the military. Jo |

When Rob was in Korea the first time, he would eat stuff that the Koreans with him wouldn't touch as they didn't know what was in it. He used to scare them with his willingness to try just about anything. He did pretty much the same in Germany. By the time he went to Korea for the second tour, he'd learned that some foods can bite back. Pam S. who was accused of trying to poison him once. |

And I closer to TWO weeks! (Or longer, if it gets shoved to the back of the shelf.) So long as it looks and smells okay, tastes all right, and hasn't grown a white fur coat, heating it thoroughly before using it will take care of any potential problems. |

I tend to agree with you, but I do have this thing about tomato sauce because as a kid I guess a teacher mentioned an experiment involving growing mold on tomato sauce, and I don't think we were supposed to do it, but anyway I thought we were and left it in the basement for a few months and ... ew. White fur coat, indeed. With grey spots. -- monique, who spoils Oscar unmercifully pictures: http://www.bounceswoosh.org/rpca |
