Fire, Water, Burn
Hi everyone...I'm back again!
At 4:30 am our fire alarm went off. We are jolted out of a deep sleep. We shove our 4 cats into carriers and go outside. Kumani is so scared she pees, on us, our floor, and her box. There's no fire, but there IS a fountain in the middle of the road and the parking lot is under water. A water main broke. The fire alarm goes off because the water supply is messed up (because if there were a real fire the fire dep't couldn't get water from the hydrants). It's cold out, REALLY cold, and the icy air and the exertion of carrying two fat cats down 3 flights of stairs after awakening from a dead sleep gives me a dirty asthma attack - fortunatley I forgot my new inhaler in the car the night before so I put that to some good use. We go home and try to mop up the cat pee and soak our clothes and stuff. But we can't go back to sleep... the fire alarm KEEPS going off periodically all morning and all afternoon. Once the water in the pipes was used up, there was no more water. I had to go to a job interview this morning feeling like a hobo from having had a sponge bath using the water left in my kettle last night, and there isn't even enough water to make coffee!!! Poor Kumani spent the rest of the morning under the blanket, not a whisker showing, and the afternoon in the couch (not on, *in*.) She slunk out in the evening, after the alarms had finally stopped. I hope everyone has a good laugh at this. The fact that I'm going to be laughing about it tomorrow is the only thing stopping me from going out on the balcony and screaming obscenities right now! --Fil |

I actually didn't laugh at this, because it sounds really annoying! I realize the alarm is there for a good reason, and it goes off when the water pipe is broken, also for a good reason, but that doesn't mean it's not annoying when it happens. Purrs for better rest tonight. And for a job offer! The fact that you were able to get all 4 cats into carriers when an alarm was going off is stupendously impressive! My biggest fear is having a real fire and not being able to find Licky. Joyce -- There is, incidently, no way of talking about cats that enables one to come off as a sane person. -- Dan Greenberg |

Fire, Water, Burn
It's less that I thought people would take sadistic delight at the misfortunes of others, and more that this whole thing took on the qualities of a farce to me. I mean, the fire alarm going off because of a water problem, not a fire problem.... ....nothing's so bad that being covered in pee can't make it worse... ....washing from a kettle is inheritly ludicrous, and in the choice between laugh and cry, I prefer laugh.... (if you go crazy FIRST and get that part over with, the rest is a lot more tolerable) and partly relief that it was't a real fire, then it would have been no laughing matter, and I suspect I was also in a weird mood from lack of sleep. At any rate, Kumani is fine, the water is fixed, and I got an offer for a seasonal position today. Seasonal work's not my ideal, but it'll get me through the holidays so I won't have to dip into my savings and it doesn't interfere with my night job. --Fil I hope everyone has a good laugh at this.
