I just let him go. I figured he was feeling ok because he hissed at
me and charged the gate of the pet porter. So I opened the gate and
stepped back into the house. He looked at me through the slats in the
side of the pet porter as though he was wondering if this was yet
another trick. Then he took off -- at a brisk pace, but not a full-on
run.

He is free to do his own thing and I will never bother him again. He
is a fine, healthy animal and I wish him well. I made sure he knows
where to come find food if he wants it.

You did a good thing, Charlie. Any sign of the mama cat or babies?

I saw her the other day. As for the kittens, they are out in the
woods somewhere, and I probably won't see them until it is too late to
tame them.

I'll trap and spay, trap and neuter, and try to beat the cycle to the
extent I can. Non-breeding ferals are hardly undesirable on this
property, because I like to have predators for the rodent population.
My next-door neighbor will shoot them on sight, I'm sure, but I can't
do much about that.

Charlie

You did a good thing getting him neutered, esp since he did turn out to be

a
lynx hybrid. He could have gone around making some super-feral babies.

Kelly, I really thought Charlie was joking about that. Charlie, did they
really say he was a lynx hybrid?

Hell no. I was joking.

I know that walk. I TNRd cats in my neighborhood and it was the
hardest thing for me to let them go. There was no other choice
though. To see a cat that you cared enough about to see to
his/her well-being (but not able to find a home for them) walk
away, turn around and look back at you, is just heart-wrenching.

Not for me it wasn't. Not with this cat.

Charlie

Congrats on the TNR Charlie. I hope he continues to come back for
food and maybe even companionship.

I have a bright yellow pet food dish. I set it on the porch in view
of the cat while he was still in captivity. A few minutes before
releasing him, I popped a can of Friskies and put it in the dish. He
ran past it when he departed, but I just woke up (2 a.m.) and I can
see that someone has eaten it. I have little doubt it was him. It
was too bad I kept him in the bathroom for so long, and unnecessarily
at that, but I think the saga has ended well.

You had no way of knowing that he was a boy and not a pregnant
female. You did the right thing.

Thanks for giving us a little testosterone tonic every now and then,

Thanks. These days I need an activity to validate my existence, since
I'm not working much.

I have the little cat I scraped off the road a couple of months ago,
and he turned out to be a wonderful pet. I thank my lucky stars I
came along when I did. I could have canvassed shelters for days and
not gotten such a friendly, fun-loving feline.

Also, there is another feral hanging about, the one I meant to trap in
the first place. I need to get her spayed. I am afraid she had a
litter already, so that probably means more ferals who will also need
spaying, unless the coyotes get them. I think the mortality amongst
wild kittens is quite high.

I should probably look for more work, but I'm lazy...

Charlie
