Cats join dogs in home's rebrand

Battersea Dogs & Cats Home has rescued cats since 1883
Battersea Dogs Home is taking on a new name to reflect its long-time
care of feline residents.
Renamed Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, it shelters and cares for 500 dogs
and 150 cats which are lost or abandoned.

A spokesman said: "Many people are still unaware that the home rescues,
reunites and re-homes hundreds of cats every year, and has done since
1883.

"Our feline friends are such a big part of the home so it's only right
that we make their status official."

Founded by animal lover Mary Tealby in 1860, the home moved to
Battersea, in south-west London, from its original home in Holloway,
north London, in 1871.

In 1896 it took in 42,500 dogs - its biggest ever annual intake.

The home also has centres in Old Windsor in Berkshire and Brands Hatch
in Kent.

I used to live 5 minutes walk from Battersea Dogs Home, and if the wind
was blowing in the right direction you could hear the dogs sometimes,
broke my heart but I lived in a flat where dogs weren't allowed so had
to have blinkers on when I walked past the place.
