Default [OT] museum guard dog destroys teddy bear collection

A Doberman pinscher, which was supposed to be guarding hundreds of
antique teddy bears at the Wookey Hole Caves children's museum in
England, instead chewed up all of the teddy bears. The collection had
been valued at close to one million American dollars. One of the
bears had originally belonged to Elvis Presley.

A security guard at the museum said he had to chase the dog for
several minutes before finally wrestling it to the ground.

I think this sets a new record for "expensive pet toys", albeit an
unintentional one.

That was my reaction as well. I both laughed and winced.

How could the dog get hold of them to damage them? Were
they not in display cases? There's a wonderful antique doll
and toy museum in Vienna, but there's no way any
unauthorized person (human or canine) could get to the items
on exhibit to damage them!

I wondered about that same thing. I have visited a fantastic antique doll
museum in Ohio, and everything is behind glass cases. That protects them
from theft but also from the environment (and obviously would have helped in
a situation like this).

I also thought that it is very fortunate there were no visitors around at
the time. Usually guard dogs aren't brought out until patrons have left,
but I have seen exceptions. And, finally, I wonder if some incident --
possibly something that the security guard wasn't even aware of -- happened
to set the dog off on a rampage like that.

Well, from the picture it looks like the teddy bears were displayed in open
cases, no glass protection. I would sue the museum for this alone, plus
having an unwatched guard dog roaming around the place. It's not his fault,
he was only doing what comes naturally. It's the museum's fault all the way.

According to the paper's this morning- many of the collection were in
glass cases but Elvis' teddy had only just arrived and they hadn't got
round to putting it in a case yet
