The Pope
John Paul II has now passed. Not being Catholic myself, my only feelings
are of a historically significant event. To all Catholics on this NG, my condolences to you. May the next Pontif be half the man this one was. -- Mathew Butler to 2 kittens: Chablis & Muscat En Vino Veritas |

May he rest in peace. The man who succeeds him will have some HUGE shoes to
fill. Taking responsibility for leading a Church with 1 billion members is a task I can't even BEGIN to wrap my mind around. I wish every kind of divine blessing and guidance on the person that responsibility falls to. |

I remember (sort of) when he became Pope after John Paul I died after only one month as Pope. I was listening to a special report on NPR today, and those who had known him personally spoke of him with love and respect, and gave me a new appreciation of him. I did not agree with all his view points, but that may have simply been a function of my not being Catholic. He was certainly a man of integrity and honest conviction, and sincerely believed in human rights and individual dignity. Requiescat in Pacem, Holy Father. Melissa |

I left Catholicism in my late teens, but have always had much respect and appreciation for this man of peace and great conviction. Indeed, his successor has mighty big shoes to fill. John Paul II started what I hope will become greater ecumenical relationships with other faiths, Christian and non-Christian alike. When I learned he'd taken part in the anti-Nazi underground, and remembered what he'd done for Solidarity and the liberation of his homeland, I realized he was not only a spiritual leader, but a head of state who worked through compassion for the common folk. May his walk over the Bridge be smooth, his eternity joyful, and his successor even half as worthy to wear the holy ring. Requiescat in Pacem, Holy Father. Amen. Blessed be, Baha |

I'd wish the next Pope to be equal or a notch better. Why get worse?
I don't know a lot about Pope John Paul II, but I know he was respected, loved, and thought well by a lot of people. I should live as long, and do as much good. -- Christopher A. May the next Pontif be half the man this one was. From the tone of Mattew Kagis' message I think that his meaning was that someone even just half as good as John Paul II would be good; in other words, he was praising John Paul II. -- John F. It's interesting about the Pope.... I disagreed with him about many things,
chiefly the necessity for contraception on our overpopulated planet and the use of condoms in this day and age of AIDS, Abortion, etc etc. (These issues I must admit are issues I have with all of Catholicism, and not just one man. I could have wished John Paul had taken a different tack from the one he did on these issues, but I didn't really expect him to.) I disagree with President Bush on many of the same grounds. And yet, I could respect John Paul II while I simply cannot stand George Bush. The Pope believed in human dignity, he gave his compatriots a source of enormous pride, and could truly call himself a compassionate Conservative. He was an intelligent man with a sense of humor, and those who knew him speak of him with love and respect. He could talk about "Culture of Life" without the top of my head wanting to blow off, while I just want to scream when I hear the President say it after his having put over a hundred prisoners to death while he was Governor of Texas. I agree with the Pope about the Iraq war, and about the disgraceful happenings at Abu Ghraib. I look at the President, and I see a privileged prat in a job much too big for his capabilities. I never doubted the Pope had the necessary qualifications, maturity and gravitas for HIS job. I hope for a more progressive view of the 21st century's realities in the next Pope, and send him all good wishes. He'll have Gigantic shoes to fill. And he'll have to try to make the job his own, while knowing that just about everyone will be comparing him to John Paul II, whether or not they're Catholic.
