ruff goes out onto our townhouse patio in any weather....rain, snow - she
likes it all. turns out she was having visitors. 11 days ago she had 3 babies.
the day after she had them, i opened the blinds to find a dead mouse on the
back step! think 'dad' must've left it and figures he's off the hook, so to
speak. haha. (ruff's never hunted and hadn't been out for a few days)
(just for the record, all 3 kittens have good homes waiting for them - all
orange like Mom!)

I hope Mom gets spayed asap. Kittens are loads of fun, and you'll have
great fun watching them--but remember, as soon as Ruff's ready to go
back outside, "Dad" is still gonna be out there. :-)

Absolutely. Unless someone is breeding purebred cats for sale there's no
reason not to have a kitty spayed or neutered so they won't continue to
contribute to the cat population. Just wait until those kitties don't find
good homes and the OP is stuck with raising them, caring for them, well into
adult kitty-hood. This is how cats like my Persia get turned out to fend
for themselves. No, I'm not pointing fingers at the OP, just saying...
people think kittens are cute but when they become demanding adult cats, you
know.

Absolutely. And I don't mean to be rude, especially to a new poster. I
am just so programmed after so many years with the shelter, it's just a
knee-jerk reaction and I honestly can't NOT get on a soapbox sometimes.
The phrase "don't worry, we found homes for them." always sets me off.
I even wrote an article for the newsletter, "The Top Ten Reasons Fluffy
is Homeless" which I'd love to reprint here, but it's too long and lots
of people might think boorish and obnoxious for this group (also it
would be like preaching to the choir).
But the gist is, unless a litter of kittens is neutered before giving
them away, the possible ripple effect from that *one* litter is
mind-boggling. And even if the kittens *are* neutered before giving
away, it very possibly displaces a home for a shelter kitten. We had
such a bad summer I am starting to firmly believe there is a finite
number of homes available, and that's it. My theory is that the trend
toward better pet ownership has taken hold so well that people's pets
live longer. That means fewer adoptions . We have been in business
almost seven years now. It's almost like we have saturated the market
for available homes in this little rural area. So I don't know what
happens now.
So forgive me if I came off as preachy or bossy. It's just something
that is never very far from my thoughts especially lately.

Sherry
