Another first for Lorelei...

Just now I see that Lorelei is on the top most level of her cat tree. I
don't know how long she's been there.

This is the FIRST time I've seen her there

Every day, I open the curtains when I get up, and close them when it
gets dark outside.

The sun set over two hours ago, and the drapes are closed.

But Lorelei is laying on the (smallest) top platform, as if she's been
doing it for a long time.

Perhaps tomorrow, she'll do it when it still light outside.

Then she could see my snow covered front yard, and the snow covered
street, and the huge piles of snow everywhere.... You get the idea.

I thought this was why Lorelei didn't spend any time on the top
platform, where she could see out of the window: there's very little to
see.

I guess I was wrong.

Like everything else, Lorelei seems to do things at her own pace....
which is very slow.

But I'll bet when Spring comes around...in about 3 centuries...I mean,
MONTHS, she will find my front yard much more interesting.

And, there will be a LOT more sun shining in the window, too.

I am thinking about putting a bird feeder in the yard, if I can fit it
into my budget

My front yard is small, and on the boulevard, between the sidewalk and
the street, just on my neighbor's side, is a good sized maple tree.

Birds like to have a tree fairly close to a bird feeder, so they have a
place to watch the feeder, and a place to retreat to, where they will
feel safe.

I know absolutely NOTHING about bird feeders.

My elderly Mother has a neat one with a counter weighted perch: if a
bird that is too heavy lands on it, the door to the tray of food closes.

This way the grackles and crows, and other less desirable birds have to
forage on the ground for spilled seeds, while the smaller song birds get
access to the buffet

If anyone has any advice on bird feeders, I would certainly appreciate
it.

I will have to put it on a pole, since there's no place to hang it.

Probably, I can buy a pole at a local building supply store, and perhaps
buy the feeder on-line, where the selection and price is usually much
better.

I have bought all sorts of bird feeders from ebay. usually pretty cheap and
there is an assortment. Glad to hear her highness is finally whipping you
into shape to know it is her way or no way. Thrilled things are going so
good.

also since you say you aren't familar with birds/feeders, go on line and
google the birds that are in your area... you might find that a bag of food
on the snow, not the whole bag but a few bits sprinkled on the snow in front
of the window might entertain her... i know little about birds either but i
know my mom always puts the feeders close'or in the trees and when she can
work it in a birdbath as well/// all of which can be purchased at yard sales
or good will if you look often enough, glad to see she is starting to get
comfortable, soft

Comfortable, if she looked anymore comfortable or at home, she would roll
off the cat tree.

into a truck stop for a while (to take a shower, or to get a meal) I'd
throw a handful of kitty kibble on the ground beside the truck. That
would attract flocks of birds, and Harri loved to watch them and chitter
at them.

except the smallest are sunflower seeds.

I used to buy several kinds but it got expensive and I found that the
majority would eat sunflowers so now I feed that exclusively. The
only thing is that they leave the hulls or shells behind and after a
while they need to be cleaned up!! I just scatter it on the driveway
/ sidewalk and that way the birds and squirrils can all eat and when I
clean the snow the hulls get cleaned with it!!

Another thing with feeders you have to try to put them so squirrils
can not get to them or they will empty them out!!

We also eventually switched to using just sunflower seeds in our bird
feeders. The birdseed mixes we find available here have a very large
proportion of millet and similar grains, and the birds tend to pick out
the good sunflower seeds and either leave the millet or scratch it out.
And we ended up with a nice crop of millet growing in the yard under the
feeder

I haven't seen a bird yet that wouldn't eat sunflower seeds. If you go to
like a rural king or such you can get them in bulk pretty cheap. If you
have squirrels (?) just add some cayenne pepper to the seeds. Won't hurt
the birds but the other critters don't like it.
