Default OT - A Prayer for Today

Please join me in sending up a prayer, purrs, or just a quiet
remembrance for those who lost their lives on this day 10 years ago, and
a special thought for the bravery of those who died going *up* the stairs.

Thank you for this. I have studiously avoided any of the remembrance
ceremonies on television this weekend.

However, at 8:00 Eastern Time on CBS there is an updated version of the
Jules and Gedeon Naudet's documentary about the NYC Fire Department's
efforts at the WTC on 9/11/2001. I might watch that. Because if it's the
documentary I remember, there is a remarkable shot of an elevator in the
lobby of th North Tower opening and the people inside had no idea what was
going on. You hear a fire fighter say "Hey, the elevator door just opened!"

Apparently the first plane hit just as the elevator doors closed and the
elevator shut down. Later, the doors opened to these very confused people
seeing glass, rubble and a lobby full of fire fighters. One of the people
who walked out of that elevator was a former co-worker, Ian Robb. They were
quickly ushered out of the building. Not 10 minutes later that first tower
fell.

Ian and I kept in touch for years afterwards. He quit his job and moved to
Savannah. We always talked about meeting for a "cuppa" on my way to visit
my parents. (Ironically, he moved back to Scotland just as I was moving
down here for good.) We lost touch after that he left the U.S.

Just the opposite, I've been watching all day long and off and on for
days now.

The most touching thing I watched, just now, that brought tears to my
eyes was the shot of people from countries all around the world who held
remembrances and left flowers and lighted candles in parks and
government buildings - some openly weeping. The thought that strangers,
who didn't even speak my language but shared my grief, reminded me that
we are all one big family when it comes down to it.
