Default Kitten is scared of my shoes

My 6 month old tom is very scared of my sneakers
and of another pair of shoes I wear around
the house. The reason is that I stepped on
him a few times while wearing those shoes (unintentionally
of course, I wasnt aware he was at my feet),
and now he's hiding under the bed whenever I wear them.
He calms down only when I get belly-down
on the floor and talk to him face to face. And he's
fully relaxed only when I'm barefooted--so to some
extent he's scared of any shoes or boots.

He seems to think that my shoes are independent entities
from me - or something. Any idea on how I can make him
unafraid of my shoes? Thanks.

Step on him while barefoot (evil grin)?

Vino is afraid of shoes too. We've lived in Thailand for 4 of his 7
years and in Thailand you always take your shoes off before going in
the house. We got in that habit too. Especially since for shoes we
mainly wear flip flops anyway. So when we come in wearing real shoes,
he gets all freaked out and prances sideways away from us. It's very
funny actually. I don't see us doing anything about the situation
until we move away from here.

You could leave your shoes lying around and leave tasty treats near
them so he makes a pleasant connection with them, place the treats
nearer and nearer the shoes as he gains confidence. It can take a
little time

Since you apparently have a habit of stepping on the cat when you're
wearing shoes then don't wear shoes in the house.... duh!

pat
same problem... I just don't wear shoes in the house (slippers are fine;
they don't seem to attract cat's paws and tails as much)

Of course, you could end up with your cat pondering The Meaning of
Shoe, as in the first picture on this page:

Hi,

When we first got Cat from the animal shelter she was afraid of shoes and
particularly boots. We did not take any special action and the fear seemed
to ebb away after a few weeks. Hope it does for you.

What adorable cats. The "die, die, paws of fury" pic is a terrific capture.
Where did you get the cat tree with the neat diamond-shaped inlay?

The shoes and cat in the first shot remind me of the Dad's shoes and the
pups in the original Walt Disney animated film "101 Dalmations." :-)
