On Aug 15, 9:09*am, (Debbie Wilson) wrote: wrote: Christina, you may have missed my post about why you should NOT use human shampoo on animals. Here is more info: "Shampoo for animals (such as for dogs or cats) should be formulated especially for them, as their skin has fewer cell layers than human skin. Cats' skin is 2-3 cell layers thick, while dogs' skin is 3-5 layers. Human skin, by contrast, is 10-15 cell layers thick. This is a clear example of why one should never use even something as mild as baby shampoo on a cat, dog, or other pet. Shampoo intended for animals may contain insecticides or other medications for treatment of skin conditions or parasite infestations such as fleas or mange. These must never be used on humans. It is equally important to note that while some human shampoos may be harmful when used on animals, any haircare products that contain active ingredients/drugs (such as zinc in antidandruff shampoos) are potentially toxic when ingested by animals. Special care must be taken not to use those products on pets. Cats are at particular risk due to their instinctive method of grooming their fur with their tongues." 'Tripsovercats', I am not questioning the correctness of the above facts, but please cite your source for this info - thanks. A quick search provided the entry from Wikipedia. There are plenty more. From the LA SPCA: " Human shampoo is not made for dogs and cats; it can be harmful to their skin, drying it out and destroying their natural oils. " From Drs. Foster and Smith: "Always use a shampoo formulated for dogs. Human shampoos have a different pH level and often use harsher detergents than pet shampoos. You can do more damage than good if you use a human shampoo on pets" I stand by the advice I gave, as an experienced cat fosterer of 12 years, in the light of the fact that (1) in the past I have used a small amount of Johnson's mild, unperfumed, alcohol-free baby shampoo for many weeks on a foster kitten who was brain-damaged and needed to be washed regularly. She was absolutely fine with no ill-effects whatsoever and still is to this day (several years later) Glad it worked out OK in that instance, but giving advice based on one experience is invalid, especially when it is a given that human shampoo should not be used on cats. I work as a vet tech for a veterinarian (I've been in the field for over 20 years) and we NEVER advise the use of human shampoo of any kind, no matter how mild it may be. It is still innappropriate for animals. It is very easy to obtain appropriate shampoos made specifically for dogs and cats, so there is no reason to recommend a human shampoo, especially when the subject it will be used on has been sick and debilitated. It is not a responsible thing to do.- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - Wikipedia is your source? The online resource that *anybody* can contribute towards? And Dr. Fosters and Smith while one of the better pet superstores, is a salesman. Of Course they're going to say buy our soap! It's safer. *rolls eyes* Your sources are idiotic. I'd rather put a ecological organic oatmeal based conditioning shampoo that was intended for a small infant on my pets than some of those very cheap $2 pet shampoos with unpronouncible ingredients. While I'm sure your advice is based on a small amount of fact, furry coats are not human skin and should be treated differently. You also failed to note that cat and dog shampoo is NOT interchangable. Go be a prick somewhere else. |

Hi, folks In the last thread I started about Kitty FC's amazing progress from being a no-hoper with RB fast approaching to a diva who had gained a lot of weight and insisted on roast chicken, I mentioned how her fur had got into a bad state, partly because she stopped self-grooming some time ago, partly because I was unable to help her with it for three months due to my own injuries but mainly because even before that she just *would not allow it* or at least not often enough to keep her up to scratch (pardon the unintentional pun.) So we needed to get the cavalry in, in the form of my friend June. snip But yay! She looks pretty again. I think she knows it. Sing I look pretty, I look pretty I'm so pleased. June was the only person amongst my friends who would have been capable of this, and I've had to hold off asking as her husband had a heart by-pass op earlier this year. "Will you help me groom my very old cat?" didn't seem appropriate at that time. Tweed Adrian wrote: I'm so glad to hear that you and June were mostly succesful, I'm sure KFC will be feeling so much better now. I wonder if she's plotting revenge. I'm so glad you were able to make KFC feel much more comfortable. Lots of purrs and hugs, Polonca and Soncek |

I have to brag on my ten year old grandson. His mother is very skilled at handling animals. But as you point out, there is a limit to what one person can do. Their 3 lb Chihuahua has been having a terrible time with her toe nails. She got nicked by a groomer as was so traumatized that we could barely touch her feet. Forget clipping nails. And the vet said she was going to have to be knocked out to do them. Not something you want to have to do with a tiny dog that is only a little over a year old. She was getting to the point where you could see her feet hurt and having trouble walking. Last week, Vicki was trying to work on her with as little luck as usual. She had the dog on her back and fairly calm but couldn't touch her with the clippers. Her son Ryan got some treats and joined them to help. The dog switched her attention to the kid and the treats. She got a bit of a treat each time the clipper got close enough to do its job, and Ryan helped to hold her as well as putting the treats in her mouth. They got all ten nails. Ryan is so pleased with himself. And Camille is running around like crazy and enjoying her new pain free feet. Jo That's wonderful to hear! Best wishes, Polonca and Soncek |

It is only one source, and I offered others. And Dr. Fosters and Smith while one of the better pet superstores, is a salesman. Of Course they're going to say buy our soap! It's safer. They are also owned and run by veterinarians with a reputation to maintain and years of schooling that you don't have. I have stated before that I work as a vet tech and have been in the field for over twenty years. The information I have provided is and has been common knowledge among those who are even slightly willing to educate themselves about cats. *rolls eyes* Your sources are idiotic. Interesting that you left out the source from the humane organization. Do you consider them idiots as well? Cherry picking is a rather cowardly way to debate. If you would like other sources here is one from a veterinary clinic (not that it will make any difference- you obviously have an agenda that does not include a desire to have an intelligent discussion): From www.pellcityanimalhospital.com- "The first point in selecting a shampoo is to realize that your pet is not a human and its skin is very different from ours. Aside from the amount of hair, your pet’s skin is thinner that ours, has a much different pH, has very few sweat glands and "sheds" at a much higher rate. So you must use a shampoo made for dogs and cats." I'd rather put a ecological organic oatmeal based conditioning shampoo that was intended for a small infant on my pets than some of those very cheap $2 pet shampoos with unpronouncible ingredients. I'm not seeing where anyone recommended a $2 shampoo. While I'm sure your advice is based on a small amount of fact, furry coats are not human skin and should be treated differently. Ummmmm, that is what I have been saying all along. So, in essence, you are arguing just for the sake of arguing and actually agree with me. You also failed to note that cat and dog shampoo is NOT interchangable. This is not true. I did state that flea shampoos for dogs should not be used on cats. I also recommended a shampoo that IS interchangeable and can be used on both dogs and cats as can most non-flea shampoos. The link is listed. Go be a prick somewhere else Do you always call people *you have never had interaction with* nasty names from the get-go? Is this how you treat people you meet in person? How sad that you choose to be this way towards someone whose only agenda here is to provide accurate information for the sole purpose of making sure that an elderly cat is treated properly. |

If I thought she was I wouldn't have bothered to offer her the information in the first place. It is about KFC. Not you. Not her. Not me. Not everyone knows everything and it is always worth imparting information if it might help someone. As an example, do you realize how many people don't know onions are toxic to cats? Or that a strand of tinsle can kill a cat if ingested? Or that flea products that are safe on dogs can kill cats? Believe it or not, Matthew, nobody is ever too old to learn, and I think you should stop and take a long hard look at the over-the-top hostile reaction you have to what I write. I am plain spoken and direct. I am not going to change my style to what you decide it should be and I find it offensive that you think you have a right to dictate what I say or how I say it. What I suggest you do is stop insinuating meanings and motives into my messages that are Just. Not. There. I think that this has much more to do with you and your insecurities than anything that I have done. You're defensive and unnecessarily nasty when it is not warranted, and it is telling. |
