All the American Indians I've ever known have disliked it just as much
as y'all do - for precisely the reason cited above. They prefer
"American Indian" or, preferably, their nation (i.e., first choice would
be "Navajo" and second choice "American Indian," or even just "Indian").

Now that makes significantly more sense to me, calling each by their nation
instead of lumping them together.

Which reminds me, the census is coming up, and in addition to its
Constitutionally-allowed purpose of counting heads for assigning the right
number of Representatives in the House, it will also be abused to count
toilets and racial demographics.

Don't you hate the forms that demand that you identify your race, and then
give you choices that assume we don't interbreed? I don't know if that's
true of the last census, but I've seen forms that basically list the
approved races and then you have to check one.

How come there aren't checkboxes for every country in Europe and Asia and
Africa, including ones that don't exist anymore because they were absorbed
in wars over the last few centuries?

Although I suppose these days I identify more with middle-class suburbia
than any ethnicity, so perhaps there oughta be a checkbox for that.

How many people plan to pretend they're Irish this week?

We were one of those poor dupes that got singled out for the pre-census
trial forms. Do you know that you can be federally prosecuted if you don't
fill out and send the forms back in? Yup. I tried to get out of doing the
form since I REALLY REALLY hate surveys. No go. I got a letter informing
me that if I didn't have my form filled out correctly and in the mail to
them in a certain time frame, I was going to become one of the guests of the
federal prison system. I was so tempted.

Some forms in Canada let you either opt out or select 'Canadian'.

What's really silly are the ones that try to figure out your ethnicity
(or at least, whether your family has been in Canada for generations)
without asking. They usually ask (1) Were you born in Canada? sometimes
followed by (2) How long have you lived in Canada? or (3) Were your
parents born in Canada (or, for the brighter survey developers who have
figured out most people had at one point two parents, who may have been
born in different countries, Was one of your parents born outside Canada?)

If I answer them honestly, I was born outside Canada, but immigrated and
lived here X years. In fact, one of my parents was also born outside
Canada. (I have trouble with questions that assume my parents were both
born in the same country.)

The survey doesn't ask if you parents just happened to be briefly in
another country when you were born! I left the country of my birth at 3
months of age, which hardly left time for it to influence me!

I have decided I'm going to make a cake for St Patrick's Day. (The
pred is running rampant)

I want to make a Baileys Irish Cream Cake. I know I'm asking for
trouble if I try to make it entirely from scratch, so I bought a
milk
chocolate cake mix, some butter and a lot of powdered sugar.

I figure I can replace part of the liquid in the cake with Baileys,
and also put some in a buttercream frosting.

Anyone out there that bakes a lot?

I'm looking for guesses as to how much Baileys I should put in the
cake and in the frosting?

Just be aware that the stuff is full of sugar as well.

You may want to use a dash of irish whiskey instead of Bailey's in
the cake so you don't overload on sugar (unless of course you like
that sort of thing). With the frosting, I'd say just mix more icing
sugar into the baileys until its stiff enought spread :-)

I just had a quick google of "Bailey's cake" - that should give you
an idea.

Irish cream is, IIRC, Irish whiskey, evaporated milk, sugar, vanilla
& chocolate flavouring if that helps.

using the nation is most prefferred but honestly most of us think the whole
discussion is pretty silly we know what we are/identify with and what others
think is really not relevant,. Lee

One of the big (and to me, silly) controversies of the recent US election
was whether the two candidates were true citizens, since neither was born
in the States.

I know immigrants that I think are far more qualified than those two bozos.

Me neither. They got here a few thousand years ahead of us by crossing the

Most American Indians don't like it either, for the reason you state,
anyone born here is "native American". We have always preferred
American Indian.

do you? Where does the term "indian" come from? How can an "original
American" be called an Indian? Unless from the old TV programmes, those
Cowboy & Indian films where the cowboys were always the goodies and the
Indians were the baddies.
I always wanted the cowboys to win (as a child) but when I grew up I
realised the truth of how disgusting it all was.

Oh, and I think anyone born here should go through the same immigration
process (including the multi-year waiting line) as immigrants. That'll
either have the effect of reforming the process or making our citizenry a
little smarter.

Probably not.

The story we were told in school was Columbus set out for India. When
he hit land here, he thought he had reached his goal and he used the
name Indian for the inhabitants.(This is the short version)MLB
