Well this day and age there could be many boats going back and forth. We
know some people drop of kitties wif no regard fur their safety on
mainland, so why not an island. I hate to think of a kitty swimming that
far on his/her own.

I think wildcats are too shy - and aggressive if you try to handle them
- to have easily been abandoned there deliberately by humans. And wild
animals can cover astonishing distances even over water - look at the
coyotes and the Cabot Strait!
