Years ago, when I introduced Betsy to Mandy, a vet advised me to let
them settle their dominance issues themselves instead of trying to be a
kind of cat-fight referee. It was really hard on my nerves, but I did
it, and eventually things settled down. I still remember the day I found
a streak of blood along one wall - one of them had gotten a nip on the
ear, small enough that it clotted up almost immediately, because of
course I checked, but leaky enough at first to leave a mark!

Sometimes, though, I've heard that the cats never get along.

Hi Bess, Meowy's meowmie here, having experienced dominance issues
among 3 cats.

Basically, all cats are territorial, with a spectrum from mild to
strong in their need to dominate. If Gordon is a strong dominator, he
was probably born that way. It shows up more as they mature. Even
though the cats may work it out among themselves, it doesn't end the
tension and stress upon the cats who are being dominated and "picked
on". It's my opinion that a strongly dominant cat should live in a
home without other cats, if the human wants them to be happy.

Hoping, though, you can find a solution without parting with a loved
cat. Maybe Stormee's suggestions?

When I brought Willow home, I just let them figure it out. First it was
willow and O T. Once it was decided O T was the boss, then he and Piglet
had to setle it between them. It is so hard to let them argue but, I
couldn't be here all the time and yes, there was a bit of blood a couple of
times. Now, Piglet is boss, then O T and Willow just does as she pleases.

Frequently super militant cats rush on legs, but hands can suffer also
if you try to calm an animal, to flatter, to take up from floor at the
moment of excitation. When cat is tens, "boil with anger", no one
should come nearer to him or ferocity of attack is guarantee.

These absolutely simple "rules of behaviour" can help all owners of
aggressive cats.


It is not necessary to pass too close from a cat, if he seems strained
to you, "has taken up a position". Put into practise distracting
tactics - throw crumpled from foil, paper or ping-pong ball to provoke
the reaction of pursuit;

Open a door or transom (if you live on the first floor);

Never calm down a fury animal by gestures of hands, voice. It is very
useful to keep silence;

If attacks repeat frequently, it is possible to give a micro doze of
sedative for some time (consult your veterinary);

Do not feed your cat with protein (albuminous) and monotonous food.
With strong wish and persistence, in strict sequence for 10-14 days an
animal can be transferred on dairy and vegetable (with adding a fish)
diet;

Analyse your actions. Remember, maybe the day before attack cat was
hurt, you stepped on paw, slapped or cursed him - such animals are
very vindictive;

Always keep a vial of hydrogen peroxide, liquid Novicova and iodine in
refrigerator.
