Can this nasty thing cause symptoms that mimic pneumonia, and cause general
blood sepsis and gastrointestinal infection? I wonder if this is the case
with The Prophet Jeff, who lives way out in the country. His symptoms were
sudden like that.

And on a better note, while he is still in ICU, he is conscious and mad as
hell they won't spring him. the pneumonia still needs work and he is on a
ventilator, but it's good to see him mad. Means there's life in him. He
misses his Sweetie cat like all hell and just wants to feel a purr.

Blessed be,
Baha

I wish I could remember more of the details (watched a PBS broadcast a while
ago) but I came away from the program thinking most people who were bitten
were goners. Those were from somewhere down under, so maybe US-bred brown
recluses aren't so virulent, but they will kill a cat, as evidenced by one of
our posters a while ago.

Healing purrs are on the way.

Keep an open mind. Discuss but don't argue. It is a mark of a superior
mind to be able to disagree without being disagreeable.

There's an iron-clad rule which says that, for every species of critter
in the non-Australia universe, if there exists a corresponding species in
Australia, the Australian one will be aggressive, lethal, and EVIL.

A bite site would be very well evident now, Baha. The problem is whether to
consider allt he symptoms as indicative of one disease, or whether the
symptoms are from a number of different conditions.

I am in in no way a medical proffesional, but would suggest that, given the
symptoms, Jeff was in very poor health before he got sick, and at least one
of the above symptoms is wha they call a 'oppurtunistic infection', that is,
it would neve rbe able to take hold had the body's immune system been
compromised by the first infection.

His whole body is suffering from infection -what caused it is the question.

And on a better note, while he is still in ICU, he is conscious and mad as

Mad as hell means he's healthy enough to have some fight left, and that his
faculties are probably working jsut fine. Both are really good, encouraging
signs. may he feel the purs of Sweetie still.

I didn't know Jeff was still in ICU! Purrs that he gets better very
soon. It doesn't sound though like what he has would be a brown
recluse bite, which I understand that if it's serious, will start with
some localized tissue necrosis that would be difficult to miss.
