On an IRC client to use the following server:

xeon.edigic.com
same port number (6667)
channel name: #rec.pets.cats.anecdotes

If you use Firefox as a browser and have Chatzilla installed you can get
there via the web thusly:

irc://xeon.edigic.com/rec.pets.cats.anecdotes

You have to use Firefox as your browser and then install the Chatzilla
add-on. Then type the URL in the browser search bar. I don't like this
version of chat. I much prefer using a non-web based chat program.

Technically, it's browser-based, not web-based. It's a JavaScript
application written to run inside Gecko (the guts of Firefox). A "web-
based" IRC client would be one that runs on a web server and is accessed
via any web browser. Yeah, I know, it's nit-picking, but programmers know
that computers are moronic geniuses, and if you don't give them absolutely
precise instructions, they'll do exactly what you told them and blow stuff
up.

What application do you recommend, instead? I know some like mIRC, and I
think it also recognizes IRC URIs because I think it installs entries for
"irc:" in the registry.

I got there just fine on IceChat, a IRC client like mIRC, but there are
loads of others too...
Here's a link to IceChat's corner on the net...

To me, browsers are "the web" It's certainly GUI, not text-based.

I've been using mIRC for about 16 years. I'm very happy with it.

I've been networking since before "the web", so for me the web is a
combination of the HTTP protocol, the HTML document format, and the various
software that understands it. Browsers are what most end users see, but I'm
both a server hacker and a communications hacker, so I tend to see "the
soft underbelly of the beast". :P

If you're a search engine, the "web" is a place that "spiders" visit.
Spiders are the programs run by companies like Google to visit every web
site and build a database of what they find.

Whatever! Good lord, either chat or don't chat. I don't really care about
the inner workings of the beast. I retired from caring in 2004
