"Denise Clere" wrote in message m... thanx,i knew about choc. being bad,but what's wrong with onions ? D Onions contain a compound (alkaloid disulfide) that is toxic to cats and can anemia, sometimes when ingested only in small quantities. Some baby foods contain onion powder, so be sure to read the container before using any baby food for the first time. (Don't let this stop you from using baby food -- just be sure to get meat-only food, not anything seasoned with onion or onion powder.) MaryL |

thanx,i knew about choc. being bad,but what's wrong with onions ? D Hi Denise, Onions contain compounds that damage red blood cell (RBCs) metabolism and cell membrane integrity causing them to be removed from the circulation by the spleen. As a result, the excess hemoglobin from the damaged RBCs is filtered by the kidneys causing hemoglobinuria. If present in large quantity, the hemoglobin causes the urine to become red or dark brown in color, resulting in anemia.
