About 2:00 this afternoon Amber started twitching her legs. I made a
vet appointment for 3:45. When I put her in the carrier she had stopped
breathing. The vet tech confirmed that she was gone. I left her to be
cremated. I'm glad that she died peacefully. She left a big hole in my
heart. We had lived together for over 18 years.

Thank you everybody for your kind thoughts. Tiger doesn't seem to
notice (or care) that she is gone. I sent Art a picture which I asked
him to post to the group.

I have to wait and see what effect Amber's leaving has on Tiger. If I
do get another cat it would have to be a middle aged cat. I am too old
(83) to get a kitten. It would easily outlive me!

Again, I'm very sorry for your loss, Mike.

I agree you need to keep Tiger in mind. He might not like some young
whipper-snapper invading his (sadly no more their) territory. I also
agree (if/when you deem it is time) about adopting a middle aged cat.
They need homes as much as kittens do, perhaps moreso.

Jill

I made a mistake taking in a kitten (Espy) after Lucky Boy died,
leaving Nico alone. That kitten drove Nico crazy and Nico got sick a
few weeks later (cancer) and died in 6 months. But Espy grew up to be
a very special cat, as was Nico. I'd swear he was Nico reincarnated
but they did overlap for a few months.

Still, after that I took in older cats. The kittens get adopted
quickly, the older cats have more trouble.

My neighbor said the same thing about her cat Schwartzie when Fedders
passed away. She told me Schwartzie didn't notice or seem to care. I
just sat back and waited because I had a feeling she'd discover she was
wrong.

Sure enough, a week later she mentioned Schwartzie was acting slightly
differently and she thinks he misses Fedders. She said he is a little
more clingy and also "talking" to her a lot more.

Fortunately both my sixteen-year-old Melisande and eight-year-old
Cendrillon are in good health. (Except for a a bit of arthritis in the
left rear leg Melly broke so severely when she was about three.) I'm
the same age you are, so I, too, would hesitate to get another cat if
one of them died. - Although I have made arrangements with a local
no-kill shelter to take my cats if they outlive me.

I'm very sorry for your loss.
Some people say that you are lucky to have had them so long so it it must
be easier to let them go.
I have never found this to be the case, the longer I have them the more I
love them.

Tweed

Of course! They are, after all, members of our families - does one
grieve any less for a parent than for a brother or sister?
