A good reason for signing up with false details, it is impossible to delete
an account. All you can do is make it dormant.

I keep getting "invitations" from FB asking me to join. A friend (actual
friend) apparently listed me to receive an invite. Now I keep getting
reminders that I haven't joined. Worse, FB sends me a list of other friends
I have on FB. Yes, they are real friends, and FB has put all this together
even though I have *never* signed up for FB. Talk about lack of privacy!

No, you didn't delete it, I can still view your details and you're still on
my friends list. As I said, it is impossible to delete a FB account.

I think you're lying.

Really? Which part of my statement? And why would I CARE enough to do

I think you're wrong (and it wouldn't be the first time either ). It
is possible that Evelyn really didn't notice the creature. I felt the
same as she did, but decided to check. To my surprise Robert (or Bob)
Catt has about 35 messages here on rpca for the past one year. I'm
certain I've read every one of them (I read all messages), but the name
rang no bell; it's as if they slid accross and did not register at all.
I'm guessing something similar happened to Evelyn's perceptions.
Anyhow, I for one won't miss him, as I was not even aware he was here
before.

Wouldn't it be nice(?) if our memories were unfailing? I have a slight
memory(I think) of him (?) writing about an outside cat under a table.
But then again, I'm not sure. If memory fails, we need good notes. But
then again, keeping notes is a bother.....whatever.......... MLB

.....And how much of lasting importance do any of us say here? (Dunno
about the rest of you, but for me it's a way of spending a bit of
leisure time.)

It wasn't as ridiculous as deleting a "MySpace" account - they actually
made you send in a picture holding a sign saying "delete me" or some
such. I thought it was a joke but that's exactly what it took - you
wouldn't believe how angry I got when I found out that only made it dormant.

LOL you're there all right, hat, glasses, info including FamilyGuy,
and guess what? You're
"friends" with tons of people you don't even know! I can deduce that
the 411 you entered on
your "page" is way old, when you were in TN as nothing there re your
present residence,
for one thing.

It says Beaufort, SC.

For the reasons I've given here in a previous post, and after a brief
interchange with a certain member of this newsgroup, I've decided to
restrict my involvement with r.p.c.a. to its group at Facebook. Other
people
have written to me me about this individual, and their comments about him
are part of the reason I will no longer be reading or posting to this
newsgroup. As of today I've removed it from my list.

I have taken the opposite approach (but certainly not because of any of
our posters). I refuse to use Facebook, for this group or any other
group. My objection is to Facebook itself, not to individual posters.

MaryL

I really don't understand peoples hostility to Facebook when they're happy
to use usenet which is accessible by anybody. With Facebook, you can
decide
who can or can't see your posts.

And you can basically force other people to read your posts, unlike here on
Usenet, which is probably why the OP prefers it.

A lot of (if not all) social websites have this feature - it's the only
way you can control who can and can't see your posts. However, my issue
with Facebook is that they keep changing things - anything from the screen

layout (so that I was forever searching for buttons and links, etc, that
I frequently used, but that were suddenly in an unknown place), to
resetting my account so that my privacy settings were all undone. And
they never sent out a notice saying they had made these changes.

And while it's true that you can refrain from playing apps, which require
that you make your information available to their software, you can't do
anything to control whether your *friends* on FB play apps. When they do
so, the app often requires them not only to make their own information
available, but that of their friends (including you) as well. The only way
to prevent your information from being viewed by app software, via friends
running apps, is to not have friends. And what is the point of that? Only
if you join FB for the express purpose of being part of a particular group
(such as RPCA) would there be any reason to get an account there at all -
*if* you want to be sure your personal info is secure.

I don't feel this way about all social media, but the fact is I just
don't trust Facebook itself to protect my privacy. Just the opposite,
in fact.

I do/did have a facebook account - obtained in a fake name to see photos
someone wouldn't/couldn't put in a more open domain. Facebook keeps
sending me nagging emails about coming back. That irritates me. I think
I tried to delete my account once. I should try again.

They do a lot of irritating things. I was constantly getting messages telling
me that I ought to send this or that person in my friends list a message.
Just because. That is not what I want from social media. I like them to make
other people *accessible* to me, but not to be my mommy, nagging me to send
a message to this person or "friend" that person, etc. Maybe there's a
setting to disallow those messages, but that setting could disappear in
the next software change, which seems to happen weekly. Or they might just
reset it back to the default, which of course is "Yes, please nag me about
everything under the sun, and please send each item in a separate email."
