YAY! I made it to the shops and back again without the crutch. Dave
was surprised but I told him crutches are a hazzard on stairs when
carting shopping bags. For most of this week he's come out and said
"You okay? Need help?" but hasn't mastered my suggesting he took the
crutch off me! Yesterday the combination of shopping and a crutch
caused me to fall backwards...at the top of the stairs....luckily
common sense asserted itself and pain from my foot is nothing compared
to what would have happened if I had fallen!

Foot seems to be getting better- one odd bit- there's a bit on the top
of my ankle that itches like mad and when I rub it the pain spreads
throughout my foot down to my big toe quite badly- anyone ever had
anything like that? (isn't aqeous cream wonderful stuff- itch
instantly stopped! ) Apart from that it just aches a little sometimes

Haven't used the crutch all day but will take it to work tomorrow to
be on the safe side
and hopefully tomorrow Dave is going to make a complaint about the
district nurses. It's been a month now since they last came round and
we don't know what to do- take the dressing off or what? Dave would
like that because he could have a shower but the side of his ankle
where he had the skin breakdown before is starting to hurt,,,,,please
don't tell me we have another crisis!!!

Someone tell me when I shot the albatross!!!!!

I now have a raging toothache, headed off to the dreaded dentist who
couldn't
see anything wrong with the tooth so X-rayed it to be on the safe
side.....

It's rotten inside- 5 days on antibiotics, a week of painkillers and then
unless I can persuade my own dentist (she wasn't working) to try root
canal
(More time off work and expense but that;s the way I would rather go)
it'll
be bye-bye tooth!

This has not been a good month for me!!!!

Default When did I shoot the albatross?? (Probably a bit long)

When did I shoot the albatross? I said that to one of my consultants
and was amazed this supposedly educated person who admits to liking
theatre, literature and poetry had never heard of either "The Rime of
the Ancient Mariner" or Coleridge- modern education? Isn't that an
oxymoron?

I did post my latest disaster through CatKB but it hasn't turned up
here

Anyway my ankle is now more or less fine. Still can't quite get my
shoe on comfortably but only another day or so I would say and I can
get about without the crutch pretty well. I took it to work simply
because I can't stand too long and if the carriage had jolted suddenly
I might have pulled my ankle again so I was hoping the crutch would
signal to some kind people a seat would be welcome and on the whole I
am surprised at how often it worked. Only on Tuesday did I have to
stand for a while and when I got off the tube I really felt it! Also I
can't walk too far without stopping but that's because I haven't been
walking any great distance for a couple of weeks and I am building it
back up.

Dave has finally complained about the district nurses and has not had
a reply I suppose PALS who handle the complaints are trying to contact
them for their side of the story- I wish them luck I never got a call
returned and never got anything more than fobbed off. In the meantime,
the skin on his ankle under the dressing is really itching and we
don't know whether to take the dressing off or not..still a week
Monday he has a chiropdy appointment and he is going to ask their
advice now maybe they won't know but they may be able to contact the
district nurses for us. Either that or his GP who I get the feeling is
worried that before Dave went into hospital we both called and asked
for a home visit and got fobbed off we might sue so he should get his
finger out!

Anyway he's okay- we're planning on going out possibly sometime this
week maybe even to quiz night

As for me....Thursday night my games club re-elected me as treasurer
to the 4th time (Really about the 7th but for a time I was secretary
and I have even once been chairperson, in 15 years of membership I
have probably held posts for 12 or more of those years) and shortly
afterwards when the debate from the floor started I fell asleep..It is
not a comment on their oratorial skills (although I doubt I missed
much) but lack of sleep, food and taking painkillers it started
Wednesday...

I had just eaten lunch and one of my teeth started to ache. Took an
Ibuprofen and didn't think anything else of it, I'd just eaten a very
crusty French stick (I love crusty bread- a good French stick and some
organic brie..who says food has to be complicated to be brilliant!)
and thought I might have hurt the gum anyway it passed ..I made a note
my check up was due (I got a letter last week reminding me Dr Beata
and her merry band wished to part me with some more of my hard earned)

Then kicked in with a vengence later

Thursday I crawled out of bed on very little sleep and grateful for
the letter which had their phone number called them...Dr B doesn't
work Thursdays but they could fit me in as an emergency at 3.00 so I
was duly grateful. Tooth seemed to settle down to the point where I
wondered if it had just been a traumatised gum but as it still wasn't
being nice about the idea of my having something to eat and having
made the appointment I figured I should get it checked out

The dentist couldn't see a damn thing wrong but on tapping the
offending molar with the handle of her mirror, it was tender. She was
pretty sure from what I told her it was a gum problem perhaps due to
crusty French bread but she took an X-ray to be on the safe side....
(and to justify charging me a few quid)

The tooth is rotten on the inside. I have 5 days of antibiotics then
have to make an appointment to have it out...

Now I don't mind dentists I mean I don't go as far as to say "My week
is made I have the enjoyment of a dental appointment!". I used to be
terrified of them but I have imperfect enamel and once spent almost 2
years with every second Friday being a 3-hour session at the hands of
a dental student- The following is true- the first dental student
examined my mouth, wrote a treatment plan (this being when I hadn't
been for ages due to fear) and left the course! But his successor was
really fun (He went off to become a doctor, which was their gain and
dentistry's loss but he was aiming to be an oralmaxillofacial surgeon-
I hope he made it) at the time, he was very popular since I worked in
the medical and dental bookshop over the road and yes, he got his
books for trade prices and I turned a blind eye to the fact he surely
doesn't need 8 copies of the same textbook!

But I hate the idea of having a tooth out- I was almost okay when she
said it I started to walk back to the chair saying "Okay let's get it
over with" but obviously won't take it out until after the antibiotics
are finished.

Now I never take antibiotics unless I must, the last time was 1999 and
after just 4 pills the tooth has settled down (I will finish the
course) and I have taken one Ibuprofen today, I can chew on that side
and it just feels odd but that as much as anything could be me
noticing it It doesn't hurt (I took the Ibuprofen 4 hours ago) and I
can bite down with no discomfort, drink cold and hot drinks okay

This is where I may have to get devious- the dentist was insistent
that it come out. When she showed the dental nurse the X-ray she
thought it might be possible to save the tooth at which point I piped
in with "I've had endontic treatment before and I would much rather go
that way if its possible"

That new nurse may not last very long. In theory, dentists would much
rather keep the tooth in than out. In reality, at least a few years
ago, they don't do endontic work because it's not economically viable
unless you go private so they used to refer patients to dental
hospitals. I have no problem with a student working on my teeth,
they're very heavily supervised (a filling takes ages because at each
stage the supervising consultant has to inspect the work and pass it
before they could go on) Then again the last time I had endontic work
was 20+ years ago so perhaps things have changed

And THAT tooth was much worse. Took 3 course of antibiotics to settle
it enough for work to start. When it flared up (trouble was I had been
on the waiting list for so long, by the time they were ready to deal
with it kicked off big time). Led to me walking into not one but two
A&E's on the same Saturday might in the wee small hours begging for
some pain relief like I was a junkie and some kindly house officer had
to give me extremely lethally strong prescription only pills so I
could doze rather than sleep for 5 days. In those 5 days I think I ate
a couple of scrambled eggs, almost passed out three times and bit my
optician! My face had hamster cheek pouches on the affected side

I still have that tooth so I hope I can persuade my dentist to save
this one or am I mad and should go and have the thing out?

I would have it out, much less trouble in the long run and you'll soon get
used to not having it. Whatever you decide purrs for the pain to go.

Marina wrote a parody of the Rime, it is in blogspots' "Mouser Tails" at
http://mousertails.blogspot.com/2005_05_01_archive.html

You'll need to scroll down to it. It is one of the best written pieces in
the blog. Now if I can remember how to get to the writing portion and what
our password was, I can write the 2008 call to sea.

Thanks that's another worry. I lost the molar in front of it many
years ago and find that on that side because of the gap I tend to bite
my tongue on that side so if I double the gap....

It doesn't now hurt at all, which is why I think it can be saved. Even
yesterday after the first dose of antibiotic it settled to the point
where I only needed two painkillers all day (And the second I took
just before going to bed as a precaution) and today I only took one
which again was more because it started to feel a bit sore than I
needed it and was hours ago at this moment, it doesn't hurt at all
even if I bite down on it
And I suppose the other thing that worries me is how did it get
infected? A year ago I had it filled and as I say on Thursday the
dentist couldn't see any sign that it was rotten on the outside so
it's not down to a filling cracking. I can't help but wonder whether
the dentist didn't do a good enough job on cleaning anything rotten
away thus trapping the infection under the filling-this is not
something you want to think about when that dentist will be the person
to take it out/do the root canal work

Marina is a genius! That was seriously funny! Just what I needed as
you can imagine I am really feeling more than a bit low what with the
foot, the tooth and the ongoing "what about Dave's foot" waiting for
my poor niece to pop, the spectre of Dave's parents in the background
etc etc and this really cheered me up1
