Need to vent (dog breeding)

I don't want to have any replies saying what I should say to my
friend about this; I already know what I would say if I had the
guts to do so.

I have a friend who breeds her poodles. Her poodles are all
pedigreed, though that means nothing to me. She shows them, and has
won some ribbons and placements. Again, this means nothing to me. I
honestly don't have issues with breeding for the sake of the breed,
whether cat or dog or rabbit or whatever. But (!)...

To me, breeding should only be done (if ever) if both male and
female are perfect, whatever that means. Her female standard poodle
came from champion lines however she has been judged as being non-
show quality due to a broad muzzle (WTF does that mean. She isn't
perfect, but it is her face FFS) Her male standard also came from
champion lines and she is bound and determined to have puppies from
the two of them. Why oh why??? If the female isn't "show quality"
I suspect that she is "hoping" that the male's qualities will be
dominant. Ugh! We work together so she is telling me every step
of the way how they are progressing to mating. She tells me
detailed accounts about his "technique" and she set up a web cam to
"spy" on them to see when copulation takes place. I'm totally
grossed out about it!!

I just can't bring myself to tell her to shut up about the breeding
details because I DON'T WANT TO HEAR ABOUT IT when so many mutts
are dying, and this pair might not create another champion line.

Ok, sorry but I needed to vent because I don't know how to tell her
to her face how I feel. Call me spineless. I don't care, its how I
feel.

I wouldn't call it spineless as much as being very polite. I would also
have a hard time saying that I thought the whole thing is disgusting.

Maybe do something quietly, like forward emails to her from HSUS about pet
overpopulation and such. She might get the message that you don't want to
hear about it.
Sounds like she needs to get a life, if she's that wrapped up in her dogs'
sex life!

I used to breed poodles and I quite frankly agree with you. We weren't
breeding for show, but did buy the best bitch we could find. Her only flaw
was two white toenails. (She was red) We went to great lengths to find the
best stud in 250 miles when it was time. Out of ten puppies, one was a
perfect show quality male. And that doesn't mean he had the spark and
personality to show well.

No one wants to hear about anyone else's hobby in great and gory detail
non-stop. And someone who feels compelled to discuss her dog's sex life non
stop would gross me out too. Are you at least in the position to look bored
and walk away? Possible muttering "gross" under your breath as you do?

It does, and I for one think the kinder thing would be to
let her know how she comes across--so that she can
avoid further embarrassment. It sure beats trashing her
to a bunch of people in a Usenet group. The things
people sometimes do in the name of "politeness" just
do not make sense to me.

I have a couple similar situations. A person I know just bred her
standard poodle to a lab - Labradoodles. The bitch was sub-standard,
while the dam (the poodle) is quite nice. All I could say was "Do you
have homes lined up for all of the puppies already?" and "Now that
they are here are you going to keep one?" and "Every litter of puppies
puts the bitch at and additional 25% risk of mammary tumors." I just
save my breath about the over pop problem - I have had this talk
before. It falls on deaf ears.

I also know a person who is purposely breeding *herself* and has
absolutely no business doing so (medical, emotional and financial
instability, to put it lightly - not going into it here). I guess she
thinks I'm supposed to be happy for her. I have just avoided the
situation altogether because it is such a train-wreck.
