NICEVILLE — After getting caught in an updraft outside of his
Niceville home on Sunday, a 4-year-old African grey parrot named
Luchello was reunited with his family Wednesday afternoon.

His owner, Francey Williams, had put up signs in her neighborhood,
placed an ad in the paper and called all the pet shops.

Luchello, who says hello, goodbye, asks if you are Ok and urges the
family dog -- now deceased -- to go potty, was talking to the woman
who found him in Bluewater Bay, more than a 20-minute drive from the
family's home.

"She was sitting there feeding him apples and peanut butter," said
Williams. "She said she was just charmed by him."

Luchello flew away Sunday after being startled by a door slamming when
Williams was getting in the car with him to go for a ride.

"He was feeling cagey that day," she said, explaining that when
Luchello really wants attention he makes a noise that she likens to
the sound of a smoke detector with a low battery. He'd been making
that noise Sunday afternoon and when the family told him, "Bad bird,
bad bird, stop it," he started calling that back to him.

To give everyone a break, she put him on her shoulder and went into
the garage. The door slammed, he startled and was caught up in a gust
of wind.

Since finding Luchello, she has heard numerous reports of how he spent
his days on the lam. One man called to report that they heard him
talking down by Giuseppe's Wharf. Another reported seeing him by Dana
Point. There were also reports of him flying around town with a blue
jay.

Finally, on Wednesday, Luchello flew onto the porch in Bluewater Bay,
where he stayed until Williams arrived.

"I feel so blessed," Williams said. "He's never been outside before."

She added that there were plans to clip his wings in the near future.
