A gnome is in the garden busily destroying some bushes when a house cat
appears. "What are you?" asks the cat.
"A gnome," comes the reply. "I steal food from humans, I kill their
plants, I make annoying music at night to drive them crazy, and I love
mischief. And what, may I ask, are you?"
The cat replies, "Um, I'm a gnome."

I have to ask for other peoples experience here. I've read of
people complaining about cats destroying plants or harming a garden.
One of my daughters neighbors went ballistic if a cat even looked at
his property. But I've had plenty of cats and lots of plants and
never a hint of a problem.

Anyone else have problems with cats and outdoor plants? I'm pretty
much convinced its something just made up by people that hate cats.

My cats eat the grass in my yard but don't intentionally harm anything
else. But I have to put cages around smaller crop plants because the
cats will inadvertently step on them or roll on them.

Oh, yes, cats can be a terrible problem for gardeners. My mother once
ended up with a rash that she attributed to droppings cats left in the
flowerbeds, and the digging to make the hole and then cover them up can
uproot plants, particularly small, newly-planted ones, or precious
seedlings that have just been planted outside. This tends to make
gardeners highly irate. Then, if you've got an un-neutered male
wandering the neighbourhood marking the territory...every so often I'd
get one who would smell my cats inside and spray next to the door, or he
and my cats would try to get at each other through the screen.

The most damage I ever had done by cats probably doesn't count, though.
One year I tried to grow catnip. It lasted for a brief time, and then I
think all the neighbourhood outdoors cats found it at the same moment,
and by morning, there was a kind of mini-dustbowl where the plant had
been. But I don't expect the serious gardeners who don't like digging in
a litter box or losing delicate plants grow a lot of catnip.

I don't think it was damage to his plants so much as using his garden as
a litter box that disturbed a former landlord. I bought him a supply of
pellets that were supposed to discourage cats. Apparently they worked
to his satisfaction. (And no, he did NOT hate cats - he wouldn't have
allowed them as tenants, if he had.)

Of course, cats and INDOOR plants are a separate problem - after several
experiences with eating and/or uprooting (including a very large
diefenbachia) I gave up trying.

Marion's old ginger cat Busby worked out a clever routine when he
lived in
her top-floor tenement flat in Edinburgh. There was a wide ledge
below
the windows that extended right along the block. So, late at
night, Busby
could get out of an open window and wander along a bit. He
discovered a
neighbour's flat had a usually-open window into a living room with
lots of
potted plants. It took them months to work out why their plants
were dying
and their pots smelt funny.

Now that's a clever cat!

Its just dawned on Charlie that Jake may spend almost the entire day
out, but he comes in to use the liter box.

My only house plant is a Christmas cactus. It's a hanging plant so the
cats aren't tempted. Right now it is blooming.
