Default should we adopt a male or a female kitten?

We're wanting to adopt another cat to keep Sushi company. We think that
getting a kitten less than 6 months old is the way to go, because
there's a better chance everyone will get along. I've read about
introducing them slowly, which we'll certainly do.

Sushi's about 1.5 yrs old, spayed female, and petite. We also have a
medium-sized mixed breed dog that's about 3.5 - 4 yrs old (also spayed
female). Zoot and Sushi are great friends and play together a lot.

My main question is - male or female kitten? Would females more likely
to get along, or less likely? Or it doesn't matter as much as their
personalities and/or their ages? All the pets I've had have been female.
My husband is worried that a male (even neutered) will spray - is this a
valid concern? Is there anything else we should be aware regarding
gender when it comes to getting a kitten?

We're really excited about adopting another critter! Nervous, too, like
we're going on a first date or soemthing. Isn't that weird?

Thanks in advance,
Irene

My experience is that boys and girl combo get along better, but this is
anecdotal only. Still the ying/yang thing seems to be a factor here.
Girl/girl combos have just always been more difficult in my experience.
Personality matters most but at that young you can't tell what the wholly
formed personality will be.
