Default Preparing for the Jellicle Ball

Location: Paris, France, 4th arrondissement, Île de la Cité

On a cool (mid-50's F) midday pedestrians on the streets of ÃŽle de la
Cité walk briskly. The sun is shining in a mostly clear sky, but that
doesn't take the chill out of the air. The sidewalk cafes are nearly
deserted, except for a few cats sitting in the chairs. Actually, there
are far more cats in the area than normal, but the humans walking by are
too uncomfortable from the chill to notice. The humans don't even notice
that the cats seated at the tables are licking from cups of espresso and
nibbling on pastries.

More cats can be seen walking the streets. These cats are healthy, well
fed, and well groomed, and stand out from Paris's many stray cats. The
little shops of Place Dauphine are graced with the presence of shopping
cats, but again this escapes human notice. In each of the shops the
resident cat serves the shopping cats, answering questions about
merchandise and accepting payment when a purchase is made.

The gardens that surround 2 sides of the Cathedral Notre Dame de Paris
are also empty of humans, aside from a few lonely souls hunched up in
their coats smoking cigarettes and an occasional tourist strolling along
the Seine. Cats meander through the garden, enjoying the fragrance of the
greenery and the many pathways under the bushes. Kittens dash between,
under and over the bushes, wrestling in the grass and darting up and down
the trees.

The Cathedral is strangely quiet. "Warning - Construction" signs keep
human tourists away. A very well-fed tortoise shell girlcat walks the
entire perimeter of the cathedral, paying special attention to the
foundation near the Portal of the Virgin. She scratches at an iron grate
near the sidewalk, and verifies that it wiggles a little. The portly cat
then walks off to find someplace to get a bite to eat.

[Before Amelia takes more than a few paces, she hears a voice from high
above:]

I already checked dat, da grate is loose like itz spossed to be. But da
doors iz open too.

[Amelia looks up trying to find the voice, and sees an orange girl cat
atop the left tower.]

Amelia: Harri, what are you doing ?! Get down from there!

Harri: Ok. Here I come!

[Harri disappears from view, the appears again - sailing over the edge of
the tower! As she starts to fall an orange parachute (a shade that
matches her fur) blossoms open and she floats to the sidewalk.]

Don't worry, wez got lots of ways into da building. Nokitty will get
locked out.

Now let's go get something to eat. I fink I saw OT aroun here. Meebe he

Isn't it beautiful? I am wondering where my wife kitty Meowy is?
I'm worried about her. I sent her an e-mail this afternoon.

At last Misty The Black Panther passes by a small Parisian Cafe where
she spots some humans eating doing her best she tries her best
"starving kitty" act on a couple sitting at one of the outdoor tables.

"If Bobcat were to seed me I'd be toast right about now", Misty
thinks.

"Oh Tom look at that small black cat with those copper-gold eyes", the
woman says. "She must be staving.
"You are such a push over for cats Anna".
"Just a tiny treat for her please Tom?"
"O.K. a *tiny* treat. Maybe she'll just go away then".
Half a stake later Misty is is grooming herself clean.

A group of six cats accompanied closely by an inquisitive looking
white-and-brown rabbit and a few House representative rats discreetly
teleport in. The smallest, a tuxedo lady, is obviously leading the
group. She's followed most closely by a sunny orange ex-tom tabby who
occasionally pauses to rub against her cheek lovingly. Behind them are
another pair, a brown-and-black petite tabby lady and a
muscular-but-fluffy jet black boy that is constantly being put back in
his place by both of the ladies. Trailing a bit farther behind is the
menagerie, with the non-feline visitors huddling close to their grey
slinky polydactyl escort. Finally is the fluffiest yet skinniest member
of the clowder, soft grey with a suiting lion's mane and bottle-brush
tail, obviously well tended by his slaves.
