PA of NY/NJ demonstration 11/15
You'd think that cats would kill birds, wouldn't you? I'm going to
this demonstration: DEMONSTRATION AGAINST PORT AUTHORITY CALLED FOR NOVEMBER 15 - Meeting of Board of Commissioners Targeted for Protest (New York, Nov. 5, 2007) A demonstration against the plan of the Port Authority of NY and NJ to exterminate hundreds of feral cats at JFK Airport has been called for Thursday, Nov. 15, 11:30 am - 1:30 pm at Port Authority Headquarters (225 Park Ave. in Manhattan, betwn. 18th and 19th Sts., just north of Union Square). The Port Authority's Board of Commissioners will be meeting on that day and are the governing body which can order an immediate halt to the extermination effort - an effort that animal welfare experts have uniformly criticized as inhumane and ineffectual. (See Letter to the Editor http://www.nypost.com/seven/10302007/postopinion/letters/aspcas_aid.htm , NY Post, by Ed Sayres, President, ASPCA.) In other developments, more JFK victims may be dumped this week at a local animal control shelter by the Port Authority's hired guns, who were trapping over the past weekend. "We start each day not knowing whether we'll be able to save all the captured cats, but we'll keep trying to delay the killing for as long as possible. In this rescue effort, the assistance of Animal Care and Control of NYC has been invaluable," said Valerie Sicignano, East Coast coordinator for In Defense of Animals (IDA) http://www.idausa.org and Program Director for the NYC Feral Cat Initiative, a program of the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals http://www.animalalliancenyc.org . Alley Cat Allies http://www.alleycat.org/pdf/pr-jfk.pdf issued a statement condemning the eradication program and labeling the Port Authority's claim that the cats were attracting birds as "ludicrous." A snap poll run by NY1 http://www.ny1.com/ny1/Polls/Results/index.jsp?voted=0&pollintid=3028&polltype= 1&pollactivequestionintid= , a leading NYC cable TV station, ended with 89% of respondents favoring Trap-Neuter-Return for the JFK cats. WHAT YOU CAN DO We must keep the pressure on in the form of phone calls, emails and faxes. We have information that YOU ARE HAVING AN IMPACT inside Port Authority! Those of us leading this effort are willing to stick it out for as long as it takes, whether that's days, weeks or months, but we can't do it without you. Please try to come to the demonstration on Nov. 15 and please read these tips carefully so we can counter Port Authority's attempts to close their eyes and shut their ears to the public: Tip #1 When sending emails, do NOT write either "JFK" or "cats" in the subject heading. They are screening for those words and deleting or bouncing back those emails. Instead, keep it vague, like "Port Authority problem" or "suggested improvement" - make up your own unique phrase so they can't screen out anymore. When calling, if you get a live person, try to avoid mentioning the JFK cats to the first person you get on the line, but instead say you want to talk to someone about a problem you're having at the Port Authority's locations. Then talk to the 2nd person about JFK. Tip #2 We're now targeting the Board of Commissioners at PA. When appointed, this Board was given the mandate of improving relations between PA and the NYC community. So they're not going to be pleased to hear about this one! Keep the emails and faxes short and polite - preferably one, no more than two paragraphs. Let them know you condemn (1) the extermination plan, (2) the lies by Port Authority that the cats are an aviation threat and all the trapped cats will be adopted or otherwise rescued, and (3) the refusal of Port Authority to communicate with the public and their attempt to ignore the community's clear feelings on this matter. Demand an end to the killing and talks with local animal welfare experts at the Mayor's Alliance. WHO TO CONTACT Anthony R.
