Default Horizontal scratcher

Buffy has finally taken to scratching it. It only took her three months
to decide.

The last few days she's been using the horizonal cat scratcher and it
does help her nails stay trimmed. She's got some sharp little claws!
Ouch! She does let me clip them but I have to sort of sneak up on her.
In between it's nice that she's using the cat scratcher. Thanks for
suggesting it, Winnie!

I'm glad Buffy has finally decided to use it!
It's gratifying when they use something you've bought for them.
Never had much luck with Boyfie appreciation :-(
Boxes to jump in and out of? No. Cat tree with string wound round on it
to scratch? No, I prefer scratching the trunks of trees in the garden.
Toys? Nope. The only toy he ever showed an interest in looked like a real
mouse, but the minute he clawed it to pick it up, he realised it was not
real and never bothered with it again.

I'd love to get him something that he likes but I don't know what that might
be.
I'd like him to have more fun, but he hasn't ever seemed to want it. He is
a dignified and earnest cat.

She likes all sorts of things. Even something as simple as a golf ball
serves as a toy:

Buffy doesn't think much about boxes, either. She does love to play,
though. The woman who was caring for her after her former owner died
sent me an email. She's thrilled Buffy has found a good home and has
toys to play with. Apparently she spent all of her time hiding from the
bully cat, Frankie, and never got a chance to play.

No, I prefer scratching the trunks of trees in the garden.
Toys? Nope. The only toy he ever showed an interest in looked like a real
mouse, but the minute he clawed it to pick it up, he realised it was not

I don't think a mouse would last long in my house with Buffy around.

Persia was afraid of mice. I remember one time when she walked towards
the kitchen and halted in her tracks. I heard her squeak in surprise.
I went to see what was up and there was a dead mouse on the floor. She
refused to enter the kitchen until I disposed of it.

I'd love to get him something that he likes but I don't know what that might
be.

I wouldn't know what to suggest. Not that it was expensive but I'm glad
I didn't waste money on the horizontal scratcher. It helps keep her
claws trimmed. She's got some sharp nails!

I suspect he has lots of fun when he goes outside.

Pickles has seldom shown any interest in playing, in the years I've had
her. However, whenever Koala wants me to play with him and his feather
on a stick, Pickles wants to play too. Maybe you should get him a
kitten. ;-)

Or a golf ball Buffy loves golf balls.

You are very welcome Jill. Glad to hear Buffy uses the horizontal scratcher.
I only clued on to it when Rusty kept ignoring the sisal rope scratcher hanging
from a door knob and instead flipped the side of my rug over to scratch the
underside. So I put the scratcher horizontally on the floor. Sure enough he
went scratching it with gusto, eventually undoing all the ropes.
Probably works just as well with a rug flipped over to expose the underside.
I also had problems clipping Rusty's claws. He moaned loudly as if I was committing murder. This from a normally very quiet Rusty.
It was days before I heard a peep out of him after I adopted him.
I don't miss the "battles" I have to wage to get him pilled, brushed, and
clipped. Teeth brushing was the only thing I didn't have problem with as Rusty
just loved his toothpaste. Even found puncture holds on his tube of toothpaste.
It was like his treat.

Hahaha! I think not. It would torment him and I don't think he would like
it. He's used to being an only cat now. He's very set in his ways, being a
middle-aged gent. Plus it might live 20 years, longer than I might given my
health history.
I do sometimes get him some catnip, but he is semi-immune to it. Kitty
Farmcat was completely immune.
http://www.sciencebuzz.org/blog/catnip-immunity

so I can't even get him stoned..

I think he probably gets the opportunity to do what cats need to do to
satisfy their playing instincts when he goes outside. Even though he's been
not quite so well recently, he still goes out about 5 times/ day. I'd love
to have a camera on his collar to see where he goes and what he gets up to.

I have no idea. I just know she made a squeaking sound and refused to
enter the kitchen. She wouldn't go into it until I got rid of the dead
mouse.
