Default Maverik - Her stories & a few photos

Wanted to share some stories and photos from Maverik. A few photos to
start things off: http://www.xirr.com/~roberts/pictures1.html ,
hopefully I'll get some better ones scanned in.

Physically she's a typical mid-atlantic barn cat. You see cats on the
side of the road from Pennsylvania to Virgina that look about like her
clone. She's a tiny cat, even at her heaviest in these pictures only
about 7 pounds.

Her personality and intelligence would take longer to explain than I
could now. Breifly she was a mighty and ferocious hunter with about a
square mile of prime woodland territory, and she maintained a family
house on the side. Not the sort of cat most people would want to open
thier homes to, but in my eyes she is about perfect. I'll try to post
her stories here as I can. It's about her, the wonderful ways of a true
feral who also kept a home.

Thank you all. She was such a beautiful cat, I miss her much. She's been
dead for a few years now. I've been wanting to tell her tales for a
while. Recently, I thought I might be ready to start a new relationship
with a cat, but I simply cannot read through the rescue and shelter
sights. Every cat is different, just like every person. I cannot read
'will not be picked up, unfit to adopt' without feeling my heart ripped
out. Bewarned, the following shows how NOT to give a cat its first day
in a new home.

Begining at the begining. I was about 12 and wanted a cat, a black cat.
I was fairly responsible, so the wish was granted Things seem to be
alot simpler then. I just picked up the newspaper, found an add that
said black kittens, and my mum drove to the farm. It was fall, crisp and
cold and the leaves on the trees where all gold and red.

The only thing I can remember next is three black kittens, in a wire
frame cage filled with hay. Two shiney black ones curled around each
other, and a the third sitting in the corner. She was greasy, and tiny,
and one of her eyes looked like giant green rotting grape.

The caretaker of the farm said it was a good time to arrive, the mother
was out hunting which allowed her to round up the kittens for us. I
wanted the little one. Tiny and alone, with greasy black hair, she was
just like me. She said the mother kept hiding her, and she would cry,
and the caretaker kept putting her back with the others, but she didnt
think the runt would last long. I remember my mother's protest about vet
bills and sickliness and ... I guess I dont really remember them, I just
wanted the little one. My mother concented, with the warning that the
vet might think the cat best put to sleep.

So she came home with us; found a spot under the refridgerator to hide,
and proceed to cry and meow. She never stopped, I could hear how
exhausted she was, how her voice cracked. She hadn't even given us a
split second to show her the food and water. I just sat nearby and read,
and cried. After about 6 hours, my father came home. A shadowy blurr
darted across the room and out the door. The meowing stopped. It was
time for dinner. So you did as you did in my house, washed up, pulled
yourself together, and went to the table.

I wouldn't stop here being it so cruel, except you all know she came
back and I need to stop for now.

That's a very cute story! You were so nice to take her when even her
mother didn't want her! It sounds like she was a good kitten, but
just neglected by momcat for some reason.
