Default First days of Volunteering

Yesterday was my first day of volunteering for the local Humane Society
(www.monroehumane.org). I spent most of the time emailing people about a
fund raising event coming up, not to mention putting in requests on all the
different online community calendars. Bloomington is getting their very own
Cheeseburger in Paradise restaurant, and whenever they open an new location,
they find a local non-profit agency and invite them to sell "tickets" to the
"grand opening", the restaurant provides food & drink, and may even arrange
some sort of entertainment (if we were a larger city, Jimmy Buffett would
make an appearance). Non-profit agency does all the advertising (since it's
non-profit, most people do the ads for free, radio, newspaper & whatnot).
The non-profit agency chosen gets to keep 100% of the ticket sales
http://www.monroehumane.org/news/article.php?id=91.

Today I went back to finish the list of "press release" recipients via their
fax. I also went "next door" and played with all the kitties they have.
They have a huge lobby, and in the mornings before they open for the public
at noon, they let the majority of the have free reign of the lobby. There's
also some domestic Bunbuns there that get along just fine with the cats &
kittens, so they're allowed out too. One (young adult) was really shy until
I started waving feathers in it's face... it snagged them, so I let go of my
end of the stick so that it would have a sense of accomplishment, and as it
dragged off it's catch, one of the kittens started attacking the loose end
of it! It was fun. One of the kittens decided that it wanted to play with
a jingly ball that was inside the cage - but the kitten wasn't. I reached
in and got it - and rolled it across the floor... a stampede of about 10
cats went after it, from all different directions! Unfortunately, there was
a Bunbun the path of one or two kittens that got a bit trampled, but no harm
was done - physically that is, just it's pride was a bit dented LOL.

I think, when I go back next week, I'm taking a laser pointer

Sounds like a lot of fun was had by all. Your description of how the
kitten attacked the other end of the feathers reminded me of how Miranda
will drag a string across the floor, looking back at the other end
trailing behind her. It's like she is dragging the string for herself to
chase (and making her Meowmie feel bad about not playing enough with the
kitten - which may be the whole point with the exercise. Maybe she's not
such a blonde as I thought .

Well, what fun you all had! Let us know how the laser goes over.

I often think of volunteering for our HL. I couldn't possibly work
w/the animals. It would make me cry, & I would want all of them, even
the d-things. But they say they have lots of other jobs available.
Sounds like you're doing good work. Cool aboout the fundraiser. I
didn't know his restaurants did that.
