Default Confused cat

My wife and I inherited a four year old cat from our son (he was
jumping into the baby's crib.) He is OK except for one thing...

He urinates in the litter box but defecates on the floor right in
front of it. It doesn't matter what the condition of the litter or
where the box is. Has anyone had any experience with this and any
suggestions?

Provide two boxes for him. Two of my cats do not like to defecate and
urinate in the same box. It is common.

Yes, one of my cats used to do that when I first adopted her. I provided
two more litter boxes, next to the first one, all lined up in a row. That
solved the problem. Try at least one more box, & see if that works out.

I agree with those who advised you to get one or two extra litter boxes. I
tell people that my cats "specialize." One litter box always has only
urine; the other has mostly feces but will also have some balls of urine.
Also, cats are very *clean* animals, so be sure to clean their litter boxes
frequently..

Would you rather he urinate on the floor and defecate in the box? g

How often do you clean out the litter box? Once a day may not be enough
with this cat, you may have to clean it out after each use.

One cat in the household? If so, then you should have at least 2 litter
boxes.

Rule out any medical issue by taking him for a vet checkup. Explain to
the vet what is going on. If there are no medical issues then please try
the above.

I have 3 cats all sharing 1 big litter box cleaned every other day
without any problems.
