Is there some big advantage these "swamp" things have over a/c? Less
electric bill? I don't know of any around here. My pal in SLC, Ut. had one
in her place when I visited and I like to have died of heat, but didn't tell
her I was uncomfortable. They are all over Denver, though.
Maybe it's the poor man's a/c, only useful in low-humidity areas? Humidity
is always near 100% here in south FL.

: more seriously hurt. Bathtub falls can be pretty serious.
:
: I think she's trying to compete with the cats by adding her own
: distinctive markings (although I've never seen a purple cat, and never
: hope to see one... grin). It looks really frightening, but she isn't
: hobbling around too much, thank goodness.
:
: I think I'm hobbling around more than she is - I did follow the "lift
: with your legs, not your back" rule, but Senyah had her arms around my
: neck and shoulders so I could help her stand back up. As a result, my
: neck and shoulders are very sore.
:
: All this, after I have frequently told her "falling down is not
: allowed" (big grin).
:
: I've never heard of an apartment complex that can only have heat
: *or* AC, and that all apartments have the same thing at the same time.
: What happens during seasonal transitions, such as early spring or late
: fall, when the weather goes back and forth between warm and cold??
:
: Well, this complex has one big boiler, and one big "swamp cooler" (a
: giant evaporative-cooling thingy that sucks during times of high
: humidity). The water that has been run through the system is then
: piped to all the apartments, and a fan blown accross it to heat or
: cool the apartment. Sort of a glorified radiator system, I guess.
:
: Anyway, during the seasonal changes, it is really miserable here. I
: don't dare leave windows iopen at night, and any time that the windows
: are closed causes the room tempature to rapididly increase.

Senyah slipped in the tub this morning, and banged herself up pretty
badly. We went to the hospital, but she's okay.

Purrs for the bruises to heal quickly.

Our apartment complex hasn't yet switched from heat to air
conditioning, despite the fact that temps are in the 80's here. This
is what sparked Senyah's fall - MS is heat-sensitive.

So, we finally see the doctor, tell him about this problem, and he
pronptly prescribes - an air conditioner. Yay! All tenants were told a
couple of months ago, to remove all window units. Now we have,
literally, just what the doctor ordered.

This also results in a cat-sized platform, extending from our window.

How long did it take for the neighborhood cats to discover this?
Minutes. First Dulcie jumps up on it, and comes inside when I open the
door. Then Squeaky Girl jumps up there, wanting to be fed.

Finally, Buster wants out. The first thing he does is jump up on the
air conditioner too.

You'd think with all the hot air pouring out of it that it wouldn't be
such a popular spot...

Hugs and Purrs,
Mark

Purrs for Senyah's quick recovery, and so glad you got the dr.'s slip
for the air conditioiner. I have one, too, with my emphysema. So
when ours breaks down, I believe I can get a new one free from the
Lung Association. Woo-hoo!

Glad the cats are enjoying it, too. Our youngest and only girl,
little Merlyn, *loves* it when we have the a/c on. She'll stand right
in front of it, nose in the air, just sucking it in. She *is*
long-haired, and I really think she does *not* tolerate heat very well
at all. She must think the air conditioner is the most wonderful
thing ever invented -- or at least that's what the look on her face
says when she's in front of it!

Purrs for Senyah. You should come up here - most years, I never turn
on the air conditioner. But then, winter isn't as nice.

Why, thank you; no one (not my SLC pal *nor* anyone I know in Denver) seemed
to know exactly how the swamp things worked inside. I get it now: when we
hear that compressor start growling outside in its covered enclosure just
outside the laundry room, I picture $$$ signs as the electric meter climbs
up a little.....no wonder no one has "swampers" here.

Sorry to hear about Senyah's fall, and purrs for the bumps and bruises
to heal soon, also that the AC will help

Of course, glad to hear the furry ones are enjoying it ;-)

Jazz will do this in the summertime. He will stand on top of the registers
(we have central heat and a/c) and let the cold air just flow up into his
body, Sometimes he sits to the side and lets the air just blow on his face.
And he's a short-haired domestic.

sending some purrs for Senyah.
Brenda

And some more from me. I'd send her a hug too, but she's probably sore
enough that she wouldn't appreciate it. ;-)

Add mine to Senyah's purr-list. And make sure you tell her that as we get
older, falls hurt more! (shields up!).
