I disagree. If previous rpca members want candles or purrs, they they
should post here. The group will die if they don't.

Exactly. And it's enabled by people that post to here from Facebook to
get
candles and wishes.
Let them come back here if they want them, is what I say.

Tweed

Usenet is already dying, many people don't even have access these days and
many prefer Facebook anyway. I don't know how you can criticise something
you've never tried.

But don't you see you are helping Usenet to die by using Facebook instead?

Except that no-one seems to see how Facebook is destroying this
group. Adrian, you never posted here about Shadow's illness and I
had no clue about
it.,I guess you did it all on
Facebook and that is not fair.
I loved that boy, he was like Boyfie, gettting a good home after
being feral, and then you throw his death into rspca.
I cannot tell you how much I was shocked.
I wept.

Tweed

I didn't post anywhere about his illness, he went downhill so quickly
I was
in shock. I miss him so much. It's not Facebook that's destroying the
group, a lot of the blame rests with ISPs who are dropping Usenet
from their service and not everyone knows how use an alternative.

I post on a couple of Usenet groups, and I must agree with the finding
that Usenet is fading away in favor of the social networks such as
Facebook and others. If it were not for Facebook, I would not be aware
of half of what my own family is doing.

Does this group exist on Facebook? Can one "friend" it ?

Jay

To have access, you have to "friend" one of the administrators, and if they
know you, you'll be let in:
Krista Lee McCrea
Tish Silberbauer
Victor Martinez
Lena Westberg
Vicky Chapman

I use both and have no problem with FB as I keep saying it's a tool
nothing else- got me back in touch with a few old friends and in 2010
we organised an amazing reunion via FB, also some family members are
on there and like a lot of families we are spread all over the place
so it's useful that way. It's good for short-ish posts but doesn't
have the chatty feel of in here- I always think of this ng as the good
natter over coffee or a beer whereas FB is more suitable for the short
phone call so to speak. FB doesn't wander in a thread- you couldn't
start with "My cat did...." and end with "stir fried prawns" as you
can here. As I say I use both-was just on FB cracking short jokes
with a friend or two (the punning is very silly - it's an old friend
who is on a diet and a Bowie fan who wondered as it was Bowie's 65th
birthday could he "eat chocolate heroes just for one day"- everyone's
sending suitably changed titles "life on mars bars" "there's a star
bar waiting in the sky" you get the drift) then I've come back here
because I like it here- to me it's not an absolute you use one or the
other- I use both for slightly different reasons but I don;t use one
to the exclusion of the other

For expressing this. But if previous members only announce the death of
their cat that we previously knew and loved for ages on rpca only on
Facebook, then I am afraid the candle I lit for Pearl today will be the
last that is not reported by the owner in rpca.
Facebook will be the death of this group. And I will not be on it, ever.

I think that's cutting off your nose to spite your face, there are over
100 people on Facebook that used to post here but don't any more.

Look, Adrian, I will light a candle for an rpca cat reported gone to RB on
here but not on Facebook via here.
Final decision.

I'm with Tweed on this and will not go onto facebook. I've seen my
colleagues go onto facebook to look at someone's page, to mock and insult
that person's family. This confirms what I had been warned about by
several people in IT. It's used by prospective employers to spy on people.
It can keep people in touch but so can an email but perhaps that would be
a connection too far.

The reasons why these people left this group vary and some of those
reasons no longer exist. They once loved the group but decided to leave
rather than accept differing views or to ignore some nasty comments. I can
understand that, there was a period where it was not a very friendly group
but it was a short period. It happens in any community until it gets it's
identity back, which this group has.

Judith

People can't look at or post on your page if it is limited to friends. Also
you can use completely fake information so only people you want to know can
contact you.

RPCA is a secret group on Facebook, the only way to join is to be invited
by one of the admins.

My ISP dropped Usenet ages ago AFAIK no GB ISPs carry it now. That's the
beauty of the Germans ;-)

Several ISPs still carry it, but the ones that still do farm it out to
companies like Giganews.
