I've got a 3 week old kitten I've fostered for the last 2 weeks. Everything
is going well except the matter of anal stimulation. I'm not getting good
results. It had been almost a week since Xena had a BM, so I took her to the
vet and watched (so I could learn) as he stimulated and got her to push some
out. It was hard as a rock, poor baby. She pees like a trooper. At what
age can I expect her to do this by herself in a litter box. Also, since I'm
not doing a great job of it is it possible she might not learn how to
defecate on her own?

You could add some drups of castor oil to her food. For the rest of
your questions I recommand this site:

Especially:

Good luck ;-)

Just to let you know.....I had some success on Saturday evening... This is
so much like bringing up my boys. Rewarding, fun, and frustrating all at the
same time.

I'm feeding her KMR that I get at PetSmart. Today I'm getting her KMR Stage
2. She actually licked a little softend Nutro Kitty Kibble off my finger
yesterday. Progress...that's the name of the game. And, I'm not so much
impatient as I am concerned about whether I'm doing the right things for her
or not. I kid my friends about being too old for this, I'm 61. I have a
very active 4 month old male and sometimes I feel like I did as a young
mother with a two year old and a newborn. But I love them both dearly and
what ever it takes to get , her and him, through this I'll do. And you're
right about forgetting the frustrating part. My two sons are grown adults
and all I remember of their babyhoods are the good parts. Same with my two
kitties. Especially next summer when I take them camping with me. I've
purchased a screened dining tent with a floor so they can't get loose during
the day. It's 9x9 so there's plenty of room for litter boxes, food, water,
climbing things and a couple chairs and a small table so I can be in there
with them.

That's great news! I'm happy for both of you.

Patience is not for sale, you have it, or you don't have it. ;-)

Hold on to the rewarding part, when Xena grows and grows, you'll forget
the frustrations. I hope ;-)

Instead of castor oil you could add some drups coffee-milk to her
bottle. I don't know if that is available where you live. It is fatter
then common pasteurized milk.

I don't know what kind of replacement for catmilk you feed Xena, but
I'm told most replacements don't produce much stool.

Around here the State owned ones don't seem to allow them either. I've got a
permanent site in a privately owned campground. The owner and his wife are
super people with a dog or two of their own. Almost eveyone there has dogs,
I may be the only one with cats. Always the different one LOL LOL LOL.
The owner said it was fine by him...

Switching to solid food can give some difficulties. You could try
giving her some yoghurt during the switch.

As far as I can see, you're doing everything right. ;-)

I understand. They're as helpless as babies aren't they.

But I love them both dearly and
what ever it takes to get , her and him, through this I'll do.

Wonderful, good for you! And they'll give you lots of love in return.
;-)

Time flies when you're having fun. ;-)

That sounds exciting! Most campinggrounds where I live (The
Netherlands) don't allow pets ;-(

I love the site. And the little ones are so cute. When I retire in about 4
years, I think I'd like to do this on a regular basis.

I do have a few pictures, but in the header all I see is your name, the date
and time. Where do I look for the email address.

I'm getting the advice from the owner/writer of
http://www.kruimelhuis.nl, she handraised (hand-reared?) a few hundred
orphaned kittens, and worked for twenty years or so as a volunteer in a
animal shelter. Most of that site is written in Dutch, the part that
was translated in English I allready posted;
http://orphanedkittens.kruimelhuis.nl.

On the Dutch pages there are also pictures of some of the kittens she
saved: http://www.kruimelhuis.nl/kruimels.html

Sadly much of the photographic material was lost in time, on the site
are the pictures which were found back.

Do you have any pictures of your kittens/cats? If so, would you please
send me some? My mailaddress can be found in the headers of my postings
;-) Thank you in advance!

Thanks for your advice...I'm getting some plain yogurt today...
