Are all we Brits of the group still dry?

For once, the stream at the end of the garden is okay, despite the rain in
my neck of the woods

No, we're actually fine with the stream well down in level. These days,
though, I keep a close eye on the weather forecast.

No problems round here, if there were I'd be OK anyway as I live on a hill.

We're just north of the worst of it. Went down to Kelso in the Scottish
Borders for what should have been their annual street fair and a bunch
of events organized by the folk club - most of it rained off, and all
the local roads under several inches of water in places. I think one
village our side of the border got cut off, and one road was closed by
a chemical tanker spill. The bus ride back was pretty dramatic, the
driver obviously knew the road very well and barrelled through water-
filled dips like a speedboat.

Ollie is emphatically demanding that we turn the rain off so he can go
out to play.

The river Taff burst its banks on Friday, which meant our normal dog
walking route was under 4ft of water. The river rose over 10ft and
came straight over the flood defences. The Cardiff Bay Barrage is
obviously doing it's job though because this morning it was back down
to its normal levels.

I live on a hill, thank goodness, but a lot of Cardiff and South Wales
roads were flooded by the Rivers Ely, Taff and Rhymney and approx a
thousand homes up in the valleys are without power due to an
electricity substation flooding.

All fun and games....

Digressing...

It is about Wales though. One of the nicest guys you could want to meet (and
he's Welsh) has won a gold at the paralympics. Simon Richardson has won gold
in the 1km time trial at the velodrome. Simon & his other half are *lovely*
very welcoming, open, friendly and Simon is a highly talented cyclist. He's
far, far faster than many an able-bodied cyclist. His gold is well-deserved
and it couldn't happen to a nicer guy. He deserves his success.

We're just having some high winds and moderately heavy rain- the
gutters along Bow Road as usual can't handle it (they have problems
with anything heavier than a shower) so crossing the road means
getting your feet soaked unless you risk not using the pelican
crossings and we're all grateful for our lovely wide pavements as cars
and buses are not slowing down so on a narrower pavement we'd be
soaked

I'm okay. The worst that happened to me is that the little bridge flooded
and cut me off from the village for a while, and it's getting muddy round
the entrance to the chicken runs.
If I had two days without rain in the last few years it would seem like a
miracle.
I was watching a TV program the other night. It said the UK doesn't have a
weather system of its own, apparently we sit in the middle of 6 systems and
get them at random. First we get weather sweeping in from the Atlantic and
then from the continent or wherever else.
It's why Brits are such weather bores. We never know what we're going to
get and find it endlessly fascinating to talk about 1. what it was like
yesterday 2. what it was like today 3. what's it's likely to be like
tomorrow. 4. if the weather forecasters got it wrong or not.

N once said to me "here in Germany we say *he's* so boring he talks about
the weather" I said "well, in Germany if the sun shines today it will
shine tomorrow and for the next x number of weeks if it is summer. In
winter you get snow for weeks so there's really no need to talk about it, is
there? and I thought we were going to stop saying here in Germany we do
this and here in the UK we do this."
When she visited me three times, 9 weeks in all, experienced the UK climate
she never mentioned once that it would be in the least boring to talk about
it after that and indeed she often enquires when we email "what's the
weather like?"
