Default Sad, but something to remember.

Recently a friend of mine lost her husband. Some friends/family chose
to send potted plants to her home. She did not spend the night after
the funeral at home, and you can guess
where this horrible story is going.

Her cat ate one of the plants, and she found him dead when she got
home. The sender
of the plant was one of her best friends, and you can imagine how sick
she was
about it too. Not entirely sure, but I think the plant was a peace
lily.

I'm not telling this just as an awful story, but it really hit close
to home for me. Many
times I have sent flowers out-of-state via internet, and when you do
that, you never
really know what they're sending, even if you request a specific
thing.
I think from now on I will donate to a charity. Flowers are getting
horrifically expensive anyway, so the price of a nice arrangement/
plant + fees is
a decent donation.

Thank you for the reminder, Sherry. We were blessed in that only one
person sent flowers and he sent then to the cemetery. Pine Cone AKA
Plant Ciller, is the reason the two plants we have are hanging out of,
we hope, his permanent reach. We have been very careful about plants
after Berfert almost died after sampling an Aloe Vera plant. Not a good
thing to have happen.

Thank you for reminding everyone of lilies deadliness to cats. I am
extremely picky about what plants live with my cat as he is alone
quite a bit. Luckily, where I come from, lilies are not popular house
plants, as they are considered mainly a first choice for ordering for
funerals and viewings exclusively. How sad that this happened to
your friend.

I was once given lilies for my birthday - I had to refuse them! I suppose
that's not very polite of me, but I'd rather commit a social faux pas than
have one of my kitties die of poisoning.

Someone also once brought me a poinsettia plant as a gift, which I left
out on my balcony. It's not deadly, but might cause a cat gastric upset,
so I didn't want that inside, either. Unfortunately I have cats who like
to chomp on anything that grows.
